4-star WR Porter Rooks visits; scheduled guests for this weekend
January 24, 2018
Blue-chip visitor
Porter Rooks is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 10 overall prospect in the Class of 2020. On Saturday, the 4-star wide receiver from Providence Day School (Charlotte, N.C.) returned to South Carolina for junior day.
“It was a great visit. I had a good time,” Rooks said. “Got to keep building my relationships with the coaches, [running backs] coach [bobby] Bentley, [offensive coordinator Bryan McClendon] and Coach Muschamp. That’s always good.
“We got to see the campus a little bit more and [go] more in-depth with each visit.”
Rooks (6-1, 180) was accompanied by his father.
“I just thought it was really interesting how, when I sat down with the offensive coordinator, Coach Mac and Coach Muschamp, how they were really just emphasizing how I would fit into their new offense and the coaching change with the new offensive coordinator,” Rooks said. “They were just talking about how I would fit into the offense and that was really interesting. They both seem really, really genuine with what they were saying.”
As a sophomore, he caught 66 passes for 810 yards and 11 touchdowns.
“They were just talking about how my playing style, being a receiver that likes to stretch the field vertically and get me in space — they were just kind of telling me how they would do that and work me into the offense,” Rooks said.
The Gamecocks certainly have his attention.
“South Carolina is going nowhere but up and that’s pretty obvious. … They’re only getting better and better, so that’s very attractive,” Rooks said.
Because he’s just a sophomore, Rooks is in no hurry to start stacking up South Carolina against his other options, and there are plenty of them. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State, Texas A&M and Virginia Tech have offered.
Clemson, where his older brother, Patrick, spent time as a basketball player, is expressing interest. Their father played basketball at nearby Southern Wesleyan University.
Incoming guests
A pair of 4-star linemen highlight the list of incoming visitors scheduled for this weekend at South Carolina. Both will be official visitors, along with two other prospects from the 2018 class:
Jakai Moore, a 6-foot-6, 295-pound offensive tackle from Nokesville, Va., lists South Carolina on his list of favorites, which also includes Penn State and Virginia Tech.
According to a recently interview with Phil Kornblut, Moore has frequent contact with Gamecocks offensive line coach Eric Wolford.
“He’s been talking to me about how I can impact the team,” Moore said. “He’s just constantly talking to me, making me feel like I’m really wanted. He likes the way I run block because I go hard to the whistle. My footwork isn’t bad; it’s all right. It’s something I’ve been working on. I just feel like my effort and size stand out. I’m a big guy that can move.”
Moore plans to visit South Carolina in March. He could return in April for his official visit.
