ABOUT THIS GAME

  • South Carolina is back home after a five-game road stint, the longest such stretch since five road/neutral games early in the 2015-16 season.
  • The series is tied 2-2 after the Gamecocks' double-overtime win at Purdue last season.
  • This is Purdue's first trip to Columbia for women's basketball.
  • Today's game features four of the most experienced players in NCAA Div. I – South Carolina's Tyasha Harris (116 games, 8th) and Mikiah Herbert Harrigan (113 games, 12th), Purdue's Ae'Rianna Harris (113 games, 12th) and Dominique Oden (113 games, 12th). Only three other teams (Louisville, Oregon, TCU) have multiple entries in the active top 12 of career games played.
  • Prior today's game, the Gamecocks will present Tyasha Harris a special ball to commemorate her 1,000th career point, which she scored against USC Upstate (Nov. 21).

Interesting comment about Amihere. I always thought she looked mechanical and like she was overthinking. I think this just confirms my belief that she is still getting the feel of the college game down. I bet it hasn't helped that her attention is also towards the Canadian Olympic team. Maybe some focused time during the holidays will allow for the lightbulb to come on during SEC play.

Gamecocks heat up hitting their final 7 shot attempts of the Period, as they take a 26-13 lead at the end of the first Stanza. The Seniors are playing like Seniors, as both Harris and Herbert-Harrigan lead the way with 8 points apiece....

That was one of the best quarters of basketball I've seen all season from our men's or women's team. I'm pumped!

Gamecocks out-rebound the Boilermakers 17-4 in the 2nd Period, and extend their lead to 43-25 at the halftime break. Gamecocks got a little sloppy towards the end of the half, with a number of turnovers and fouls, and Purdue scored the final 7 pts of the half. Good news is that Aliyah Boston hasn't got un-tracked yet in the game, with only 2 pts on 1-5 shooting, and the Gamecocks still have their huge lead.....

This is one of those games for Purdue, where they are going to have one player score all or most of the points for them, and that player is going to go off, but the rest of the team is struggling....

The Ladies are looking really good.  This might be the best I've seen them play in a while.
The team had that 5-game road-game stretch, where they also played 4 of them in one week. That was 2 weeks ago, with the 5th game at Temple last weekend. I think they got home where they were able to practice and work on some things, and got back into their familiar routine of sleeping in their own beds and eating their own foods. It looks like they got their batteries recharged.....

It looks like Cooke has found her game. Very impressive on both defense and offense. I also saw some things from Beal that I haven't seen her do in a game.

Gamecocks close out the 3rd Period on a 7-0 run and lead 68-42 heading into the 4th Qtr. Boston playing much better in the 2nd half, with 6 pts and a couple of blocks in the 3rd Period, to improve to 8 pts for the game. Both Harris and Cooke who had a strong 3rd Period lead the Gamecocks with 14 pts each.....

Gamecocks win 85-51 to improve to 10-1 on the season. Six Gamecocks scored in double digits in balanced scoring, and the guards led the way: Destanni Henderson came off the bench to lead the team with 15 pts, 6 rebounds, and 2 steals. Ty Harris and Zia Cooke each scored 14 pts - Harris led the team with 5 assists and added 2 steals, and Cooke added 5 rebounds and 2 steals of her own. Also contributing to the scoring was Kiki Herbert-Harrigan with 12 pts, and 5 boards, Lele Grissett had 11 pts, 8 boards, and 2 blocks, and Aliyah Boston added an all-around strong game - especially in the 2nd half - with 10 pts, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 blocks, and 2 steals. Laeticia Amihere led the team with a career-high 9 rebounds, along with 3 steals and 2 blocks.

Overall it was very balanced scoring, rebounding (the team dominated the boards 56-28), and strong team defense....

EDIT: I'm hearing from the radio broadcast that the final basket made at the buzzer by Purdue did not count, and so the final score should be 85-49 South Carolina.....

OK, Men's Gamecocks! You have your challenge set before you: let's beat Clemson by a similar score!!

A little side-note for the game: Gamecock F Elysa Wesolek was not eligible for the game - she is the final Gamecock that has not completed her Final Exams. She still has one test tomorrow, so she wasn't allowed to suit up and play today. Wesolek was the only Gamecock that is eligible for this season, not to play today: Olivia Thompson got into the game and hit her first shot attempt - a 3-ptr. Destiny Littleton of course is ineligible this season as she sits out this season as a transfer red-shirt, per NCAA rules....

Wesolek is expected to be good to go for the Gamecocks' next game this Thursday, against Duke......
