5-star DE KJ Henry recognizes need for pass rushers at South Carolina

May 08, 2017

MATTHEWS, N.C. — Five-star DE KJ Henry, one of the top recruits for South Carolina in 2018, is approaching the next step in his recruitment.

At some point this summer, after he visits Penn State, Henry’s top 10 will be chopped in half. Alabama, Charlotte, Clemson, Georgia, Louisville, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, South Carolina and Virginia Tech are the suitors hoping to make the cut.

The Gamecocks hosted him on April 1 for the spring game.

“It’s really no secret that they’re looking for some pass rushers,” Henry said. “They say I could make an immediate impact and that’s something that sounds special. [Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson], he came down and he told me pretty much, at my school, everybody knows my name there. It would pretty much be the same [at South Carolina].

“Just thinking about that, that’s a really special feeling. Great school. Very competitive as well.”

According to the 247Sports composite, Henry is the ranked as the No. 2 weakside defensive end in the Class of 2018. Nationally, he’s No. 18 overall.

“They’ve definitely got some playmakers down there, but they’re not getting to the quarterback as fast as you want them to, so that was a big thing that hit home,” Henry said. “You hate to see a team that’s not successful with it, but as a recruit, it’s something you want to see as far as getting on the field.”

Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Penn State, South Carolina and Virginia Tech are pushing the hardest.

Henry, who graduates from West Forsyth High School (Clemmons, N.C.) in December, plans to take his five official visits before making a decision.
