5-star, Miami RB Lorenzo Lingard enters transfer portal

Word is a lean toward Gamecocks at this point, with UCF in the picture s well. RB coach Thomas Brown recruited him while at Miami.

Miami sophomore running back Lorenzo Lingard has entered the NCAA transfer portal, per a source.

Lingard, who was a five-star recruit according to the 247Sports Composite in the 2018 recruiting class, played in just two games during the 2019 season.

According to Pro Football Focus, Lingard played six snaps on special teams in week six against Virginia Tech. He played two snaps at running back in the regular-season finale against Duke.

Lingard did not receive any carries in 2019.

His true freshman season was cut short in 2018 to a knee injury that was sustained in practice after the seventh game of the season. According to Miami coach Manny Diaz, Lingard was planning to take a redshirt this season because he was still working his way back from that knee injury.

With Lingard playing in just two games in 2019, he retained his redshirt status this year due to the redshirt rule that allows players to see action in four games and continue with that status.

In 2020, Lingard will be a redshirt sophomore.

"We know when DeeJay Dallas and Cam’Ron Harris are running the ball well, they are guys that have home run hitting ability,” Manny Diaz said earlier this season. “This is Miami. This is the way it is supposed to be. There is going to be competition and guys have to fight for their place.”

Lingard shined last year in back-up duties against FCS opponent, Savannah State, rushing for 82 yards and two touchdowns. One of his touchdowns went for 64 yards.

The summer before his freshman season at Miami, Lingard clocked a 4.27 in the 40. He is believed to be the fastest player on Miami’s roster.

As a senior in high school, Lingard gained 1,701 yards on 207 carries and scored 26 touchdowns as senior en route to Gatorade Florida Player of the Year honors.

Lingard is also an accomplished track and field athlete, claiming Florida state 4A Championship in 110-meter hurdles. In high school, he posted elite hurdle times in both the 110M hurdles and the 300M hurdles, running a 13.94 in the 110M hurdles and a 36.63 in the 300M hurdles. Lingard has also run a very fast 10.71 in the 100 meters.

During the early signing period, Miami signed Top 100 running back prospect Don Chaney and four-star running back Jaylan Knighton. Both players are scheduled to enroll early at Miami for the upcoming spring semester.

Is he expecting a hardship waiver?  Otherwise, him using a redshirt year this year wouldn’t matter to his eligibility at a USC.
