Pushing the Dawgs

Five-star wide receiver Jadon Haselwood has been committed to Georgia for more than a year, but he has made multiple visits to South Carolina during that time.

Haselwood, the No. 2 overall prospect in the Class of 2019, was most recently on campus for one of the Gamecocks’ spring practices.

“I’ve got family down there, so that’s kind of like a home, I would say, but I don’t know if that will be something down the road in my recruiting,” he said, after The Opening on Sunday.

The Dawgs will be tough to top for the Cedar Grove High School (Ellenwood, Ga.) standout, who has a close relationship with Gamecocks offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon.

“He’s pretty cool,” Haselwood said. “He’s a young guy, so we get along pretty well. He can understand me, and I understand him.”

First to offer

South Carolina was the first offer for 2021 linebacker Chaz Chambliss, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound prospect from Carrollton (Ga.) High School.

“It’s kind of amazing because it kind of feels like a relief,” he said of the offer. “It just feels like you’re on top of the world.”

Several other schools have jumped into the mix, including Georgia, Georgia Tech, Michigan, Mississippi State, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Syracuse and Tennessee.

Chambliss hasn’t visited South Carolina, but he is interested in seeing the school.

“I don’t know much [about the Gamecocks],” he said. “But I know they like me as an inside or outside [linebacker], and it’s just a good football program, in general.”

5-star gives South Carolina a 10

Five-star cornerback Chris Steele, a 2019 prospect from Bellflower, Calif., visited South Carolina last weekend. After the trip, he spoke with SportsTalkSC’s Phil Kornblut.

“Overall, it was a great visit. If I had to rate it on a scale of 1-10, it would definitely be a 10,” Steele said. “I got to meet with Coach Muschamp a few times. I got to meet with [defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson] as well. If I were to go to South Carolina, I know I would definitely get developed and be ready for the next level.

“Their resume kind of speaks for itself. Quincy Wilson, that was my favorite corner in college. To have the opportunity to play for a coach who coached him, Vernon Hargreaves, just some dudes like that, I definitely know I would be ready for the next level.”
