General George Patton's 3rd Army broke through to Bastogne and relieved the siege the defending units had been under seige since being encircled by the Germans a week before. for a bit of reading, including a bit of debunking of the myths that the Americans were caught completely off guard, see the link below. If you had any relatives in the battle, please reply with a bit of info. One of my uncles was in the 82nd Airborne and saw action towards the end of the battle.

My FIL was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. I asked him about it and he said the thing he remembered the most was the cold. Mind numbing temps were as big an enemy as the Germans.

I'm not sure when it happened, but he also had a bronze star medal. He was a bit embarrassed to say why, but it seems he had to carry a machine gun across an open field to protect his company's flank.

I often wonder how I would respond if asked to do a similar task. Sobering, for sure.

Raise a toast to these brave souls!
