That he was. His right middle finger was shot off on D-Day. In most scenes involving his hands, they used another actors. They did slip  on occasion as you can see when he's holding a bunch of tribbles.

Awesome! I just watched the episode of Star Trek: TNG when they find him 75 years after he was lost in a transporter malfunction... Good one!
