Because of seeing the success of one of our early season opponents, UNI, I started doing a little more digging into the NET rankings of our opponents throughout the season.  I'm now of the mind that Coach Frank Martin has been right all along in saying that OTHER than the head-scratcher (or in his words "absolute stinker") of a game vs. Stetson, we've really been playing at a high level all year long.  We simply didn't realize the types of opponents we were facing at the time.

For a bit more detail, here are the current NET Rankings (and records) of teams we have played in the 2019-20 season, with a "W" or "L" following the team name to identify whether we won the matchup or not:

1.)   North Alabama (W) – NET 268 (6-11)
2.)   Wyoming (W) – NET 297 (4-16)
3.)   Cleveland State (W) – NET 304 (6-13)
4.)   Boston University (L) – NET 177 (9-9)
5.)   Gardner-Webb (W) – NET 268 (4-11)
6.)   Wichita State (L) – NET 30 (16-3)
7.)   UNI (L) – NET 35 (14-2)
8.)   George Washington (W) – NET 198 (8-10)
9.)   UMass (W) – NET 174 (7-11)
10.) Houston (L) – NET 36 (14-4)
11.) Clemson (W) – NET 76 (10-8)
12.) Virginia (W) – NET 66 (12-6)
13.) Stetson (L) – NET 310 (7-11)
14.) FLA (L) – NET 39 (12-6)
15.) TN (L) – NET 57 (12-6)
16.) KY (W) – NET 23 (14-4)
17.) TA&M (W) – NET 133 (9-8)

Auburn (?) – currently NET 20 (12-2) headed into tonight's game.

Of our losses, Stetson and Boston U are considered the “bad” losses.  Note that currently Boston is ranked roughly where George Washington and UMass are (both W’s for us), and more or less mid-ranged rankings in the NET.  In other words, I don’t see the Boston University loss hurting us a great deal.

Stetson, on the other hand is a TERRIBLE loss, no matter how you look at it.  They’re 310 in the NET (out of 353)

But here’s the GOOD news…

UNI, who seemed a bit of a head-scratcher earlier in the season is sitting at #35, and holds a 14-2 record.  They’ve also gotten a few other quality wins and ALMOST knocked off W. Va., with a questionable call keeping them away from that win near the end of the game.

Wichita State also has a quality record, and sits at #30 in the NET rankings this week.

Of our 7 losses, 4 are against teams ranked between 39 and 30 in the NET (Wichita State, UNI, Houston, and Florida).  We have one loss against a top 60 NET ranked team (TN).  That means that we have lost to 5 of 7 teams that are currently HIGHLY ranked in the NET, and who all have records of at least 12 wins and no more than 6 losses.

Honestly, the more I look at things, as long as we take care of business in the SEC and get to 12 conference wins, and those wins include Auburn, ‘Bama, and Tennessee, I anticipate that our record and our wins against quality opponents warrant that we get into the NCAAs.

I'm interested to hear everyone's thoughts on this information, and get some feedback about my thoughts on the remainder of the season/NCAA opportunity for us.
