A View from the Other Sideline: Georgia State HC Shawn Elliott looks forward to the season opener at USC (AUDIO)

06/08/2022

The 2022 college football season kicks off in just under three months, so we at #SportsTalk live by the creed, “it’s never too early to start talking football.” With that in mind, we’ll take a few moments over the next couple of months to preview each of the opponents facing USC, Clemson, and our other instate programs heading into the fall.

Recently, Georgia State head football coach Shawn Elliott dropped by the program to discuss the Panthers’ season opener in Columbia versus USC. Very few coaches know the Gamecocks’ program better than Elliott. The Camden native served as an assistant at Carolina from 2010-16, moving into the interim head coaching role following Steve Spurrier’s resignation in October of 2015.

Elliott, who has guided the Panthers to three bowl wins, is obviously excited about the opportunity to return to Columbia on September 3rd. Especially after Georgia State won seven of its final eight games last season, including a bowl victory over Ball State at the Camellia Bowl on Christmas Day.

GSU HC Shawn Elliott — SportsTalk Conversation (06-01)

Shawn has more miles under his belt as a HC than Shane does and he has the potential to get the upset against us just like he did against the Vols a while back.

GSU doesn't have the best overall record sometimes because Shawn has made a conscious effort to schedule tough OOC opponents to make his team better and get visibility to recruits.

GSU has won enough games each season to make bowl games and win them, but not enough to win their conference and/or get ranked nationally. This may well be the year that changes for the better.

There would be greater potential for upset if we had the same two QBs as last year. Clayton White's defense and the veteran experience of Rattler at QB will probably save our bacon in Game 1.

There are many reasons why Shawn will have his team pumped up for the upset and he will certainly deserve it if that happens.

"We had a running back with some fumbling issues. About the third game I told him, 'I know how we're going to fix the fumbling problems. We're just not gonna play ya.'"
-Shawn Elliott

Shawn will have his guys ready to eat lightning and crap thunder.... or whatever the hell Mickey said. Our guys need to be ready for a sucker punch at the start and for their guys to be fired up.
