Alabama commitment Robinson to visit Gamecocks next week

CB Jahquez Robinson of Jacksonville has been committed to Alabama since February but his recruiting remains live, and as soon as the dead period ends next week, he plans to take an official visit to USC. Robinson and his parents plan to visit the Gamecocks July 24-26. He attended a Will Muschamp camp in June and picked up his offer then, and got a chance to see the facilities and campus, but this will be his first chance for an in-depth visit.
Robinson has some goals in mind for this visit with the Gamecocks.
“Just spending time in Columbia and see how that is,” Robinson said. “I’ve never been to South Carolina. I’ve been to North Carolina and Georgia but never been to South Carolina, even though my family is from there. Also, spending time with T-Rob (Travaris Robinson) and Coach Muschamp and see how T-Rob is. I had met him before last time I went. I like the way he coaches.”
Robinson said Muschamp is making a hard pitch to him about the opportunity for early exposure at USC. He was in his ear a lot during his camp visit and also made sure he got time with two of his young corners who played last season as freshmen.
“He’s comparing me to Jaycee Horn and Israel (Mukuamu),” Robinson said. “He had me working with those guys a lot, talking with them. He was just saying there’s nothing wrong being a big fish in a good-size pond, basically meaning it’s OK being a great player and going to a school like South Carolina and making a name for yourself early. He’s trying to change the program around. He’s telling me that I can go in there and be on the field early and make plays, all to get to the next level.”
All Muschamp has to do is convince Robinson his future would be brighter at South Carolina compared to national power Alabama. Robinson is listening to Muschamp and others, but he’s holding to his Alabama commitment right now.
“I wouldn’t say it’s (the commitment) weakening, but I don’t want to close out any other schools because I haven’t been on any official visits, so I haven’t really seen any schools that are of high interest,” Robinson said. “I feel like South Carolina would be a place of high interest because my family is there, Coach T-Rob, Coach Muschamp is a defensive coach. It’s not like it’s a drop-off going from Alabama to South Carolina, not too much.”
Robinson plans to take his official visit to Alabama the weekend of the LSU game. He also is looking at Georgia Tech, Tennessee and Ole Miss for official visits.
Last season Robinson had 22 tackles and 2 interceptions.
