An update on JUCO star RB Robert Henry
SPORTSTALK / December 7RB Robert Henry of Jones (Junior) College was named the winner of the inaugural Walter Jones Award as the top player in all of junior college football this season. USC running backs coach Monterio Hardesty jumped on Henry in November and offered him. In the last few days, Jacksonville State, Liberty, East Carolina and Middle Tennessee State also offered.
Tuesday afternoon Henry tweeted that he had committed to Jacksonville State. Soon after, he deleted the tweet, and Tuesday night he said he did so after another conversation with Hardesty.
“He was telling me, don’t go to Jacksonville, you’re much bigger than that,” Henry said. “I let him know I messed up. I know I’m a big-time player, I can play on the biggest level. So, I was like, I want to be at South Carolina. That’s what I told him. Hopefully he will hit me back. He just told me to think about it.”
Henry said he was planning to take an official visit to USC this weekend until his commitment-noncommitment with Jacksonville State. He is still hoping to make that visit.
“If I’ve still got the offer, and they still want me, I’m going,” Henry said. “What I just did, he (Hardesty) could easily forget about me and go look for another running back. But he’s showing me that they really need me. Of course, they run the ball, so I know I’d be getting touches.”
This season Henry rushed for 1302 yards and 18 touchdowns, leading the NJCAA in both categories, and he caught 19 passes for 128 yards.
