Anderson gives Gamecocks offense a thumbs up from spring game performance

Last season’s USC offense finished with a #111 national ranking. Not the kind of showing Shane Beamer and offensive coordinator Marcus Satterfield wanted in year one. But the last two outings by the offense surely have given Gamecock fans some reason for hope. In the bowl win over North Carolina, the Gamecocks totaled 543 yards. And in Saturday’s spring game, the two offenses combined for 456 yards.Watching from the stands were 32 prospects offered by Beamer including highly regarded offensive tackle Markee Anderson of Dorman. Like the fans, Anderson liked what he saw from the Gamecocks.
“I think it was a great game,” Anderson said. “Offensive line was very physical. Defensive line was moving fast. Quarterbacks were getting the ball to who they were throwing to. Some great overall plays by the running backs cutting into the holes that were made by the offensive line. It was an overall great game.”
The crowd was announced by USC at 20,671, though many fans on social media disputed that as being well below the actual number inside Williams-Brice Stadium. Whatever size it was, the crowd was loud and enthusiastic about what the Gamecocks were doing on the field. Anderson took notice.
“I like how it was a spring game, but there were still a whole lot of people there,” Anderson said. “The stands were still heavily packed for a spring game. Great atmosphere all-around.”
Anderson said he also visited North Carolina for their spring game, and that and the USC spring game have been his only visits of the month, besides an earlier visit to USC to watch a practice. He doesn’t have any others planned at this point. He also visited Clemson in March. Now his plan is to work on reducing his list.
“I’m most likely dropping a top five list sometime in May,” Anderson said. “I’m planning on taking official visits in June. We’ve got some dates we’re thinking of, but nothing set.”
Anderson did say USC and Clemson will get two of his official visits, and he previously stated plans to set one with LSU. Some of his other offers are Auburn, Washington, West Virginia, Arkansas, Virginia Tech, Florida State and North Carolina.
Anderson was joined on the visit to USC Saturday by fellow Dorman offensive tackle DJ Geth. He’s under evaluation by both the Gamecocks and Clemson for an offer.
