Dantrell Barkley was one of seven recruits to tweet word of his offer from South Carolina on Thursday.
Barkley, a junior college prospect out of Independence (Kansas) Community College, is originally from Kannapolis (N.C.) High School.
He got the news from Gamecocks defensive line coach Lance Thompson.
“They were saying how they like the way I move around and what not,” Barkley said. “They like the way I moved for a defensive tackle. They think I could be a good piece in their defensive scheme.”
Running backs coach Bobby Bentley recruited Barkley while he was still at Kannapolis, so the contact predates Barkley’s JUCO move.
“I know a couple of coaches off the coaching staff, so I know a little about them,” Barkley said. “I like their campus and how they run things down there, from what I’ve heard, from what I see.”
This summer, he’ll take an unofficial visit to South Carolina. An official visit will be used in the fall. Syracuse also is in contact with Barkley (6-foot-4, 285 pounds).
As for the other announced South Carolina offers on Thursday:
2018 3-star DT Dennis Briggs (Kissimmee, Fla.)
2018 3-star DT Darnell Jefferies (Covington, Ga.)
2018 DT John Campbell (Orlando, Fla.)
2018 3-star ATH Richard Jibunor (Athens, Ga.)
2018 3-star CB Divaad Wilson (Miami, Fla.)
JUCO DT Tayland Humphrey (Hutchinson C.C.)
More from Wednesday’s offers
It was Thompson who reached out to Andres Fox on Tuesday and relayed news of the Gamecocks offer. Fox, a 3-star defensive end from Mobile (Ala.) Christian School, has landed a handful of SEC offers this month, including Alabama and LSU.
“(Thompson) said he really loved my film and he said keep grinding in the classroom and on the field,” Fox said.
The 6-foot-5, 230-pound prospect said he will visit South Carolina at some point along the way, though no plans have been set.
Four-star safety DeMarvion Overshown landed his South Carolina offer on Tuesday. He is “going to try” to make his way to Columbia for a visit.
Overshown’s offer sheet includes Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Ohio State, Oklahoma and Texas.
