Another JUCO guest visits campus
Dantrell Barkley, ranked the No. 10 junior college prospect in the Class of 2018 by 247Sports, visited South Carolina on Wednesday for the second session of Muschamp Camp.
“It was pretty cool. I got to meet with the coaching staff and meet Coach Muschamp for the first time and some of the other coaching staff that I haven’t gotten to speak to,” Barkley said.
Barkley, a rising sophomore at Independence Community College (Kansas), picked up his offer from the Gamecocks in February.
“(Muschamp) said he was really interested in me and that he would love to have me as a part of his team, for the 2018 recruiting class,” Barkley said.
Defensive line coach Lance Thompson has served as his primary recruiter to South Carolina. He put Barkley through the paces during camp on Wednesday.
“It was pretty cool, because I got to see the way he is in his little football mode and how he coaches, his coaching techniques, tendencies and what not, as well as the rest of the staff,” Barkley said.
Muschamp, he added, is “pretty cool.”
“He’s a pretty laid-back coach, but he coaches pretty hard,” Barkley said. “I think he knows what he’s doing, because of his coaching resume. He’s had numerous players at the next level and at the college level as well, so I feel pretty confident in what he’s doing.”
Barkley is on break through the end of July. Most of his time will be spent at home in Kannapolis, N.C., though he plans to get out for a few more visits. Arkansas State is up next. A trip to Virginia Tech or Kentucky is also in the works.
Along with South Carolina, Barkley has offers from Arkansas State, Colorado and Colorado State.
Jaylen Harrell offered
Jaylen Harrell, a 2020 linebacker from Tampa, Fla., landed his offer during the middle of camp. After director of player personnel Matt Lindsey pointed Muschamp in Harrell’s direction, the Gamecocks coach pulled him out of position drills and delivered the news.
Florida State commitment offered
Harrell wasn’t the only member of the Florida contingent, which had a handful of significant guests. One of them was Quashon Fuller, a 2019 defensive end from South Fort Myers High School who’s committed Florida State.
South Carolina also offered Fuller on Wednesday.
More news on Florida targets
The Gamecocks already had an offer out to 2019 cornerback John Dixon, a 3-star prospect from Wharton High School in Tampa. Dixon, who camped last summer and visited unofficially, picked his offer up in the spring of his freshman year.
During the group’s multi-day tour to several SEC schools, he’s added offers from Alabama, Auburn and Florida.
“It was fun,” Dixon said of South Carolina’s camp. “Coach (Travaris Robinson) is probably my favorite coach and Coach Muschamp is really cool.”
Muschamp Camp: Thursday guest(s)
For now, 3-star linebacker commitment Ernest Jones IV is the only notable recruit who’s confirmed as a guest for the third session of Muschamp Camp.
But that doesn’t mean others won’t emerge without warning from SEC Country. Look no further than the Florida arrivals Wednesday.
Even if it’s a light load on Thursday, things will heat back up on Friday and Saturday. Each day, the Gamecocks will host a lineman camp and a high school 7-on-7 tournament. Plenty of notable recruits will be on campus this weekend.
