My dog was barking at something in the backyard and my wife found out it was a snake and started screaming lol. I went outside to check it out and it was curled up right by the grill. It wasn’t that big... maybe 12” or so but I’m curious as to what type it is.

No rattlers? Where's the head? It has rattler type markings...not sure if it's too juvenile to have rattlers.

No rattle.. might be too young if it’s a rattlesnake. It’s head is at the top of the picture... punctured by the shovel.

Lol, it's dead. Its head is at the top of the body there and had a shovel taken to it.

It was curled up right by my grill and my dog was barking at it but luckily nothing happened there. Also when it was killed it didn't really lash out or squirm or anything like I was expecting it to.

 
There is a facebook group for snake identification. They usually respond very quickly and will let you know if its' venomous or not so you don't kill the wrong snakes.
