Arnette switches directions and opts for Ohio State

Long time USC commitment DB Damon Arnette of Fort Lauderdale announced a commitment to Ohio State on Twitter Monday night. Arnette’s decision came a day after he completed an official visit wit the Buckeyes. He also considered Michigan down the stretch.

He had been committed to USC since July.

“I want to thank everyone that helped me with this recruiting process, I really appreciate everything,” Arnette wrote. “I’m honored to say I’m officially committed to THE Ohio State University!”

Arnette becomes the 9th decommitment from USC’s 2015 class the third from the secondary. His deletion from the class leaves the Gamecocks with 30 newcomers set to join the program in 2015.

 
Nine of our "COMMITMENTS" signed with other schools. Gee, I wonder if there's some kind of problem here?

 
I disagree. Why should there be any signing periods at all? Whenever a kid is ready to commit, right then and there he signs his LOI  which is binding on him and the university. What's wrong with FREEDOM? Answer? It doesn't work for the NCAA plantation system - the last bastion of indentured servitude in America. The NCAA and the universities have no interest in the rights of the kids and every interest in their own bottom lines.

 
But also, Shep, nine commitments signing with other schools clearly demonstrates the poor salesmanship of our coaches. Every sale contains an offer and a binding consideration. To offer a scholarship to a young man without securing adequate consideration is irresponsible. In this case, the consideration we seek in return for securing a limited availability spot in our recruiting class is a kids promise to stop talking to other coaches and visiting other schools. Unless there is a binding consideration from the recruit he will not associate any value with our offer. He can take it and forget about it if he gets what he perceives to be a better offer without it costing him anything. 

At the conclusion of every sale I make, before I leave I offer the check back to the client in order to affirm that he is comfortable and solid with his buying decision and so that I will not waste time submitting and processing his business only to have him reverse his decision upon product delivery. This act of good faith is usually declined but I hardly ever fail to place the business I submit. For nine kids to decommit and go elsewhere is truly shameful. They apparently did not associate any value in the offer we extended to them. It is a very fundamental mistake that we are making in our recruiting.

This happens at nearly every school, every year.  The problem is systemic.  The solution is the eradication of the NCAA (not happening anytime soon).

 
No, Shep. NO WAY do NINE kids - ONE THIRD of our recruiting class - flip. If Clemson had one kid to flip, I'd be surprised, you know why? They have just such a policy as I described. Once a kid commits to Dabo his recruiting is OVER, Go ask Mark Fields.

So you're saying you'd rather have Dabo as your coach.  Got it.

 
Dabo and his staff are better recruiters and better closers than our staff and I'd switch our recruiting class for theirs in a skinny minute. And since you're trying unsuccessfully to make me look dumb, I'll say that if you think the future is bright with a 70 yr old coach, no successor plan, and a recruiting class with 7 JUCO's and 9 commits who enrolled elsewhere that displays your intelligence pretty well. Dabo is eating our lunch and it's only going to get worse. Did you see not only who they signed yesterday (and Mark Fields who was going to be one of our top recruits isn't even among their top group) but the 3 who committed to them for 2016? Their 2016 class is over half way finished. So go ahead Shep and keep those garnet glasses spinning bilge out of your breath. Here's a picture that reminds me of you....
