Coaching search update: What's next for Arkansas?

Posted by: Pete Roussel on September 23, 2012

During an interview last Thursday with Arkansas sports radio personality Bo Mattingly, I stated that I hated to see the masses begin to pile on John L. Smith during this time.

It's just my nature. I enjoy seeing people do well. I live better not wanting to slam the next coach that opens himself to widespread criticism.

Sure, John L. didn't help himself with his handling of the halftime interview with CBS' Tracy Wolfson during the Alabama game.

Then there was the whole "Smile, or I'm not talking" story.

Couple that with the national headlines last week about John L. being $25 million in debt and the fact that his brother died last week.

There's no telling the criticism he's going receive this week following Saturday's 35-26 loss to Rutgers.

To me, it's still a shame the events that led to this situation. Arkansas fans should still point the finger at Bobby Petrino.

Now, Jeff Long is beginning to move forward in the process. He's actively investigating candidates for the head coaching position. You can bet, at the top of his priorities, is finding the right person.

Long may look to find out more about coaches like David Shaw, Mark Dantonio, Chip Kelly, Willie Taggart, Sonny Dykes, Mark Hudspeth, Al Golden, and Jim Leavitt. There are a number of NFL assistants trying to get involved. Above all, he's going to find out about these coaches as people.

I don't know if the Razorbacks can rally this season. Kirk Herbstreit stated during LIVE SportsCenter last week that if the Razorbacks didn't show some spunk against Rutgers, the season would officially be over.

Maybe so.

Moving forward, it's important to avoid an all-out dumpster fire. Coaches are aware of how Arkansas fans treated Houston Nutt. If they see a cruel turning on John L., it could create apprehension for a certain could that otherwise would be exciting to go after this job.

Yes, coaches want to coach where the expectations are high, but they also notice the tendency of a fan base. Do they want to stick together and make the best of the situation and look forward to the future, or would they rather just beat a dead horse.

Not all coaches care about that, but there are some that do. Coaches work so many hours; they want to enjoy what they do. They appreciate high expectations, but a fan base can be positive selling point during a coaching search. It's not going to be one of the most significant reasons in luring a coach, but it can become a detriment if a fan base becomes a repeatedly over-critical group.

I talk more about the Arkansas coaching search in this video with Lisa Cornwell of SEC Press Pass.
