South Carolina coach Will Muschamp continued his assault on the in-state talent for the 2017 class Sunday with a commitment from Athlete Tancey Richardson of South Aiken High.

The multi-talented Richardson (5-11 175) picked the Gamecocks over Colorado State. He also had offers from Mississippi State, Southern Miss, Coastal Carolina and Charleston Southern.

Richardson’s recruiting started out slowly and it took some time for the bigger programs to take notice. USC didn’t offer until earlier this month after two camp visits. Richardson said the wait and the work were worth it.

“It feels great, you know, I just had to work for everything to get this Carolina offer and that was kind of a big one,” he said. “And they are close to home and my friends and my family can see me play, and that was kind of my decision for going there. I really liked Colorado State, too. I lived in Colorado before. I just kind of narrowed it down to how close to where my parents can see me play.”

Proximity to USC wasn’t the only reason for choosing the Gamecocks as Richardson built a solid bond with defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson and Muschamp over the recruiting process.

“The coaching staff is great,” he said. “They all want to do one thing and that’s build a family. Coach T-Rob is a great coach. He actually wanted me to commit earlier and I decided to wait it out. I know he can work with me to perfect my craft.”

Richardson can play cornerback, safety and receiver and is a threat in the return game. He said the Gamecocks will start him out in the secondary.

“I can bring a lot to the table,” he said. “I can play some man corner or I can go to safety and just cover. I have the skills to be a ball hawk. They said I will be a DB but if Coach B-Mac (receivers coach Bryan McClendon) wants me at receiver, I can go in there at receiver, and he said I’ll be doing a little at punt return.”

Richardson is the 18th commitment for USC’s 2017 class and the 10th from South Carolina, and he feels it’s a special group of in-state talent that Muschamp is compiling.

“It shows that Coach Muschamp knows what he’s doing,” Richardson said. “He knows that there are a lot of in-state guys that are underrated. It feels good.”

Richardson said that while he is committed he’s not completely shutting down his recruiting and will continuing to talk to other schools as they contact him.
