Attention from Will Muschamp; Crystal Ball picks for Gamecocks

Feb. 15, 2018

Coach’s utmost attention

It would appear that Curtis Fann Jr. is getting the type of recruiting attention that Will Muschamp has devoted to a handful of other defensive prospects since taking over at South Carolina.

The 4-star defensive end from Twin City, Ga., told Phil Kornblut of SportsTalkSC about his daily contact from Muschamp, who also serves as the Gamecocks’ recruiting coordinator.

“He tells me he needs me there and I can really help and come be a part of the first championship. He’s recruiting me harder than any other head coach,” Fann said. “That means a lot.”

From this perspective, that reads like it’s the same type of attention Muschamp showed 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge (Concord, N.C.). The 2018 signee was a priority for Muschamp and that attention clearly paid dividends in South Carolina’s recruiting win against Georgia.

It’s possible the Gamecocks will get a similar payout whenever Fann elects to close the book on his recruitment.

“They were telling me they need me there, they can use me early and there’s an opportunity to play,” Fann said of his January visit. “I feel like they are going in the right direction.”

It’s worth repeating, but Fann won’t name a leader for public consumption, at least not until he’s ready to commit, so don’t read too much into the fact that he hasn’t come out and said South Carolina is the team to beat.

“I don’t ever want to name a leader,” From last month, “because, with this recruiting stuff, anything can really happen, but they’re really, really high on my list, I will say that.

“I love South Carolina. There’s nothing that can really change about that.”

In on the action

Three-star offensive tackle Jaylen Nichols (Charlotte, N.C.) was offered by South Carolina during camp last summer. In December, he became the third 2019 prospect to join the Gamecocks’ class.

Nichols isn’t shy about lending Muschamp a helping hand in recruiting Fann to South Carolina. The two prospects met at the camp session, which led to Nichols landing his offer from the Gamecocks.

Of course, it remains to be seen if Muschamp and Nichols are able to fend off a few other notable suitors, including Auburn, Clemson, Georgia and, perhaps to a lesser degree, Tennessee.

The Crystal Ball pick

One day, you might be able to see which prospects SpursUp Surveillance makes Crystal Ball selections for, but we’re still waiting for the folks over at 247Sports to provide the power to pick.

Until then, you can continue to just read about the predictions in this space.

Fann would have added a Crystal Ball pick for South Carolina before the run on Gamecocks predictions that proceeded his junior day visit. To be more specific, it would have been made about three weeks earlier during the Georgia junior all-star game circuit.

More South Carolina picks

While we’re on the subject, here are five more 2019 prospects that you would see with South Carolina selections, if SpursUp Surveillance had access.

The picks below are listed in order of confidence.

  1. 4-star DT Rashad Cheney (Ellenwood, Ga.)
  2. 4-star ATH Jammie Robinson (Cordele, Ga.)
  3. 4-star OT Michael Tarquin (Belleview, Fla.)
  4. 5-star DE Zacch Pickens (Anderson, S.C.)
  5. 3-star RB Michel Dukes (Charleston, S.C.)

To be clear

For the sake of transparency, SpursUp Surveillance would have issued a South Carolina selection for just one of the 2019 commitments, prior to their respective announcements.

That would have gone to 4-star wide receiver Jamario Holley (Rock Hill, S.C.).
