Will Muschamp’s arrival to Columbia, S.C., is appealing to Auburn commit Carlito Gonzalez 6'2" 190lbs, who conceded to SEC Country he will give his standing offer with South Carolina a second look.
“I look at (South Carolina) real differently because they might be bringing some funk back, especially with (Steve) Spurrier leaving,” Gonzalez told SEC Country. “It might be a young, new era, all black uniforms, just nasty. I want to see how that is going to go.”
The three-star safety has been committed to Auburn for half of a calendar year, but he admits the departures of Muschamp and one-time defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson have impacted his recruitment.
Gonzalez acknowledged he was close to committing to the Gamecocks before pledging to the Tigers back in August. Former co-defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward was the first to offer him, but Gonzalez decided against making a decision. He later unofficially visited Auburn for a prospect camp, where he developed a strong relationship with Muschamp and Robinson.
The 6-foot-2, 190-pound junior from Stone Mountain, Ga., says Auburn’s next hire at defensive coordinator will play a role in his decision-making process. Gonzalez received a visit from a member of the Auburn staff shortly after Muschamp’s departure.
“I do have an offer from South Carolina,” Gonzalez said. “(Auburn) said they were going to get some new coaches. It was a big impact. It’s a long way to go and I have a lot to think about.”
He is rated as the No. 36 prospect in Georgia in 2017.
