Babalade commits to the Gamecocks

August 05, 2022

1659736301089.pngGamecock offensive line coach Greg Adkins has another huge piece for his future group after 4-star OT Oluwatosin “Tree” Babalade (6-5 296) of Hyattsville, MD publicly announced a commitment to the Gamecocks. He joins Trovon Baugh (6-4 315), Isaiah Jatta (6-6 310), and Jatavius Shivers (6-7 270) as future Gamecock trenchmen.

Babalade visited South Carolina last weekend to cap his recruiting travels. He also visited USC for the spring game in April and he took an official visit in June. He also made official visits to Maryland, Rutgers, North Carolina, and Ohio State.

Babalade felt very much at home in Columbia with Shane Beamer, Adkins, and the rest of the Gamecocks, and he said as much following his official visit.

“It was really about the family part,” Babalade said. “There’s a lot of schools that have the family part, but I felt it in the room with them. I just felt it the whole time. And the players, I just had whole conversations with them, and it was great.”

Babalade was favoring North Carolina early in his recruiting, but after the official visit with the Gamecocks, things started to move in favor of the Gamecocks largely because of how Beamer and Adkins made him feel.

“They just like everything about me. They just love me. I just like the energy from them,” Babalade said. “He (Adkins) said he really liked the way I moved. My film was great. He loves my size and how I can move, and he feels he can develop me to a better level.”

Babalade is the latest major prospect from Delmarva scooped up by the Gamecocks. On the roster, they have Marshawn Lloyd, Deebo Williams, and Braden Davis from Delaware, and WR Antwane Well, Jakai Moore, Vershon Lee, and Colin Henrich from Virginia. He’s the 17th commitment for the 2023 class.

Greg Adkins is on track to have signed 4 blue-chip offensive linemen in his first two years. Compare that with Eric Wolford who signed 2 blue-chip guys in 4 years here. Greg Adkins is cleaning up.

I think a variety of factors are at play. Obviously, Coach Beamer’s culture is playing very well on the recruiting team. I also think this staff is more selective and has a bigger footprint than the previous staff. Lastly, I seem to remember Wolford wanted guys to commit right away.

Hats off to Adkins and the current regime. Whatever he’s doing, it seems to be working.

Spot on analysis, Feathered. I am really excited about the quality of the O-line recruits we have targeted and are getting to commit. I think all of us realize it's probably been close to a decade since we've had a legitimate SEC O-line. I'm hopeful about the line this year and excited for the future.

It would be nice to be in a position where the season play exceeds the pre-season hype for the O-line. Experience hasn't performed for us, here's hoping talent will.

I like the attention to the trenches from this staff. Took Dabo and company many years to build a good OL. Beamer seems to be attacking it early with some really good success.
