Two weeks ago, South Carolina held the ball 23 minutes and three seconds, meaning LSU’s offense got 38:57 to impose its will on the Gamecock defense.
South Carolina (6-2, 4-2) is ninth in the country in total defense and 95th in total offense. The disparity is enough to cause a divided locker room if the players allow it, but the Gamecocks insisted this week they won’t.
“Can’t get frustrated,” senior spur DeVonte Holloman said. “Our job is to stop them from scoring no matter where they get the ball. That’s something that we try to take pride in here. A good way to handle that is to fight and stop them from scoring.”
South Carolina’s defensive upperclassmen have not felt any need to tell the younger defensive players that, Holloman said. “Everybody naturally understands,” he said.
The Gamecock defense has allowed 4.1 yards per play the last two weeks (only three teams in the nation have held teams to fewer yards per play this season) but has no wins to show for it.
“Yeah it’s frustrating, but coach expects us to make stops in the red zone,” cornerback Vic Hampton said. “We just have to protect the red zone, don’t let the other team get in there regardless of where we get the ball at.”
