GAME 1

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The University of South Carolina baseball team welcomes Cornell for a three-game series March 6-8 at Founders Park. The series opens Friday night at 4 p.m. (change from the original schedule) with a 4 p.m. start on Saturday afternoon. The series concludes Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m., a time change from the original schedule. All three games will be streamed on SEC Network Plus. All games also will be broadcast on The Game 107.5 FM. The Gamecocks defeated Furman, 3-1, in 12 innings on Tuesday night (March 3). Cam Tringali threw five innings of hitless relief to earn the win while Wes Clarke's sixth home run of the year in the 12th was the difference.

PROBABLE PITCHING ROTATION
Friday
South Carolina Carmen Mlodzinski (R-So., RHP) 1-1, 3.15 ERA, 20.0 IP, 3 BB, 17 SO
Cornell Colby Wyatt (Sr. RHP) 0-2, 6.75 ERA, 9.1 IP, 3 BB, 10 SO

SCOUTING CORNELL
The Big Red have a 1-5 record heading into the weekend. Cornell was swept by Duke in the opening week, then dropped 2-of-3 games to Niagara in Colonial Heights, Va. Cornell defeated Niagara, 6-5, on March 1 as Nicholas Binnie drove in a pair and John Natoli allowed just one earned run in six innings of work. Natoli, who was an all-Ivy League relief pitcher in 2019, has a 0.82 ERA with 13 strikeouts in 11 innings pitched this season. At the plate, Wils Guy is hitting .364 with a pair of doubles and Ramon Garza leads the team with four RBI.

SERIES VS. CORNELL
Carolina and Cornell have met on the diamond four times before Friday night. Carolina holds a 3-1 series advantage, sweeping a series in 1964 before falling to the Big Red in 1972 in a game played in Riverside, Calif.

CAM LEADS BULLPEN MASTERPIECE VS. FURMAN
Cam Tringali pitched five hitless innings, striking out seven in Carolina's 3-1, 12-inning win over Furman on Tuesday night (March 3). Tringali, along with Graham Lawson and TJ Shook, did not allow a hit in eight innings out of the bullpen. Shook picked up his second save of the year with a strikeout in the 12th inning.

FARR AND AWAY HIS BEST OUTING OF THE YEAR
Redshirt sophomore Thomas Farr allowed just two hits and one earned run with three strikeouts and a walk in five innings of work in Carolina's 8-5 win over Clemson on Saturday, Feb. 29 in Segra Park. Farr allowed the run in the first inning and then threw up four straight zeroes on the scoreboard in his 85-pitch performance. On the season, Farr is 2-0 with a 2.79 ERA and eight strikeouts in 9.2 innings.

***PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT***

The game today against Cornell - originally scheduled for a 7:00 PM start - has now been moved UP to a 4:00 PM start time. Most likely having to do with the expected cold temps later tonight, rather than any possible rain. The forecast for this weekend is looking pretty good as far as sunshine and no rain, but the temps for night-times may be a bit frigid.....

After an uneventful 1st inning, Carmen Mlodzinski struggles with 2 hits and 2 errors from his defensive support as Cornell take a 2-0 lead, going to the bottom 2nd inning....

Bottom 2nd inning, Cornell 2-0:

Brady Allen reaches safe on a 1-out error, then Beaver singles to put 2 Gamecocks on with 0 outs. Jeff Heinrich then hits a liner to right field for a RBI single to drive in Allen and bring the score 2-1. Burgess comes in then and wallops a fly ball that bounces off the Big Red fielders' glove for their 2nd error, and two more runs score. Gamecocks lead 3-2, still 0 outs.

George Callil is walked, and then Noah Myers grounds out to 2B, but a run gets in from Burgess scoring. That does it for the Gamecocks in 2nd, but they take the lead 4-2! All 4 runs scored were unearned.....

Don't understand why Mlodzinski is so scared to pitch to the opposing batters with sub-.200 batting averages. The intimidate him so. second walk of a batter with a below-.200 batting average on the season, where Mlod just pecks pecks pecks at the strike zone, mostly missing by a good bit. He's attacked batters with .300+ average. It's weird......

Bottom 5th inning, Gamecocks lead 4-2:

Both Andrew Eyster and Wes Clarke struck out each in their first 2 at-bats. They come up again in the 5th, with 2 outs in the inning no one on. Eyster singles and then CLARKE HOMERS to left field that stays fair!!!! Gamecocks extend their lead to 6-2! Cornell still has more hits on the game, 6 to 5.....

top 6th, Gamecocks lead 6-2:

Mlodzinski gets the 1st out, but then walks the next 2 batters. His day is done with a win decision on the table. Carmen went 5.1 innings throwing 100 pitches - he faced 26 batters, giving up 6 hits, 2 runs with 1 earned, and 5 strikeouts and 5 walks. Daniel Lloyd comes in out of the bullpen....he sandwiches a walk between 2 strikeouts, to retire the side.

Gamecocks 6-2, bottom 6th.....

We got something going in the bottom: Cornell relieves their starter on the mound, and the new pitcher gives up two singles to Heinrich and Burgess, and a walk to Callil to load the bases with 0 outs. Noah Myers is next up...

Myers SINGLES to drive in Heinrich! 7-2 Gamecocks with bases still juiced and 0 outs.....

Braylen Wimmer came in at 2B for Campbell. He flies out to right field, but its enough to drive in Burgess! 8-2.....

men on the corners, Myers steals 2B. Throw to 2B is off - an error!! Myers advances to 3B on the error, and Callil scores!! 9-2

Eyster grounds out to 3B, but it scores Myers! 10-2 Gamecocks now! Bases are empty and there's 2 outs, but damage has been done!

Clarke flies out to end the inning, but now the Gamecocks lead 10-2, top 7th inning

Top 7th inning, Gamecocks lead 10-2:

Julian Bosnic comes in for Lloyd to start the 7th. He retires the side in order around a walk, with two Ks and a fly-out.....

Gamecocks 10-2, 7th-inning stretch: "Take me out to the ball-gaaame......"

Bottom 7th, Gamecocks lead 10-2:

Got something else brewing here - pinch-hitter Bryant Bowen walks, then Callil singles with 0 outs. Josiah Sightler pinch hits - he hits a fly out to right field for the first out.....

Wimmer also flies out to RF, 2nd out. It's a very chilly, windy night at Founders Park.....

Eyster grounds out to end the threat. But Gamecocks still lead 10-2.....

Gamecocks retire Cornell in order for both the 8th and 9th innings, to win 10-2. Got some young bullpen relief into the game tonight - Lloyd, Bosnic, Trey Tujetsch, and Brett Thomas all got some throws tonight. They combined to pitch 3.2 innings of no-hit, shut-out baseball, with 8 K and 2 walks. In the 12-inning game versus Furman earlier this week, our bullpen also did not give up a hit during their innings, so the BP has gotten some good work put in lately.....

Carmen Mlodzinski (2-1) gets the win as the Gamecocks improve to 9-4 on the season.....
