GAME 2

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The University of South Carolina baseball team (9-4) continues its series with the Big Red of Cornell at Founders Park after winning the opening game 10-2. The second contest is scheduled to start at 4:00 PM. All three games of the series will be streamed on SEC Network Plus, and will be broadcast on The Game 107.5 FM.

PROBABLE PITCHING ROTATION
Saturday
South Carolina Thomas Farr (R-So., RHP) 2-0, 2.79 ERA, 9.2 IP, 3 BB, 8 SO
Cornell Spencer Edwards (Fr. LHP) 0-2, 3.38 ERA, 8.0 IP, 7 BB, 11 SO

In the Friday opener, the Gamecock bullpen did not allow a hit for the second consecutive game and the offense had a pair of four-run frames as Carolina defeated Cornell (1-6) 10-2.

Cornell scored both of its runs in the second, but the Gamecocks bounced back with four unearned runs in the bottom of that frame. Colin Burgess brought in two runs on a three-base error by the Big Red centerfielder. Jeff Heinrich and Noah Myers each had RBI's in the inning.

Wes Clarke belted his seventh home run of the season in the fifth to make it 6-2. The Gamecocks then scored four more runs in the sixth as Myers, Braylen Wimmer and Andrew Eyster each drove in a run.

Carmen Mlodzinski earned the win on the mound, striking out five and allowing six hits and one earned run with five walks in 5.1 innings pitched. The quartet of Daniel Lloyd, Julian Bosnic, Trey Tujetsch and Brett Thomas did not allow a hit and each pitcher struck out two batters.

At the plate, Dallas Beaver and Heinrich had two hits apiece, while Myers and Clarke drove in a pair.

POSTGAME NOTES

  • The bullpen has now gone 12.2 consecutive innings without allowing a hit, going back to the first batter in the eighth in Sunday's game against Clemson.
  • Clarke now leads the team in home runs (7) and RBI (19).
  • Mlodzinski lowered his ERA to 2.84 and is tied for the team lead with 22 strikeouts.
  • Carolina and Cornell met on the diamond for the first time since 1972.

Today's lineup:

EShk-SXUwAIGQV4

Looks like Brennan Milone is going to make his return after being out since the 2nd game of the season with a hip flexor injury. Milone is arguably the highest regarded freshman in this season's 2019 class (for the 2019-2020 season, which this season is), and was one of the better performers during the Fall Camp, and is a very naturally gifted hitter. Perfect Game rated Milone the 4th-best freshman in the SEC coming into this season, so he certainly comes with impressive accolades. He's been listed as day-to-day since his injury, but he's in the lineup today!

Noah Campbell taking the day off - during yesterday's game, he seemed to wrench his wrist during an at-bat, and was favoring it through the rest of the game. He continued to play, but it must have hampered his being able to swing the bat like he wanted, and late in the game he was replaced by Braylen Wimmer, who is starting today. No idea on the extent of the injury to Campbell....

Game begins!

1st inning - Thomas Farr retires the Big Red in order with 1 strikeout. Bottom 1st, Noah Myers gets things started by hitting a TRIPLE!! Man he has some wheels! The Cornell pitcher started off with a strike, but fell into a hitter's count with 3 straight balls, and had to groove one in there to keep from walking Myers, and Noah was waiting for it, and walloped the ball to centerfield.

Jeff Heinrich SINGLES UP THE MIDDLE!!! Myers scores, and we are on our way!!! 1-0 Gamecocks, man on 1B, 0 outs......

Andrew  Eyster strikes out for the 1st out. Then after Heinrich advances to 2B on a wild pitch, Wes Clarke comes to the plate, and Clarke HOMERS TO LEFT CENTER!!! He SMOKED IT!! 3-0 Gamecocks, 1 out. A Cornell visit to the pitcher's mound. That is Wes' 8th Home Run on the season already....

Brady Allen walks, and Milone hits into a towering pop fly out for the 2nd out. Then Allen gets caught stealing for the final out, but the Gamecocks do damage behind Clarke's bat

3-0 Yardcocks, end of 1st Inning

Bottom 3rd inning, Gamecocks 3-0:

We have something going in the bottom 3rd: Cornell walks Myers and Heinrich with 0 outs. Myers stole 2B before Heinrich ended up walking. Eyster steps into the batter's box...

Now BOTH Myers and Heinrich steals 3B and 2B. The Cornell pitcher must be ignoring the base-runners, or he has a looong pitching wind-up, OR the Cornell catcher is just not good at throwing out base thieves.....

Eyster walks!! Bases stacked, 0 outs!! This Cornell lobber is ripe for the picking!! Clarke is up nest - he is the guy who hit that 2-RBI HR earlier, by the way. There's NO PLACE TO HIDE!!!!!

The Cornell pitcher takes that literally, and HITS CLARKE! That pushed in the 4th run for the Gamecocks, and the bases are still juiced, 0 outs. The Cornell staff beckons to the bullpen......

Gamecocks 4-0, bottom 3rd inning....

Gamecocks 4-0 bottom 3rd inning:

Still bases loaded, 0 outs in the bottom 3rd for the Gamecocks. Allen faces the new Cornell pitcher. Allen singles driving in Heinrich!!! We're playing station to station. The base-runners advance a base off of a wild pitch, and Eyster scores!! 6-0 Gamecocks! Now runners at 2B and 3B with 0 outs. Then Milone walks to load the bases back up!!

Burgess spoils the fun by hitting into a double-play, but Clarke scores. Then Wimmer grounds out for the final out of the inning, but the Gamecocks add 4 more runs to the score:

Gamecocks 7-0, end of 3rd inning

Gamecocks still lead 7-0 midway through the 6th inning. Thomas Farr having a strong game today - only 1 hit and 2 walks, with 6 punch-outs. He's thrown 88 pitches - he should be OK for the 7th inning, but that's it I imagine.....

Gamecocks 7-0, bottom 6th inning

Bottom 6th inning and the Yardcocks have something building again: lead-off batter Wimmer reaches 1st safe on a muffed catch by the 1st baseman, and Myers walks to put 2 on again, with 0 outs. Cornell is struggling with the free passes to the bases today....

Heinrich hits a RBI single that scores Wimmer, and it's now 8-0 Yardcocks....

Eyster hits into a fielder's choice that gets the 1st out at 2B, and it's Gamecocks on the corners, 1 out. Clarke is intentionally walked to load the bases, and then Allen pops up to the pitcher. 2 outs. Then Milone flies out for the final out. Could've been more damage done there, but Gamecocks still lead  comfortably.

Gamecocks 8-0 end of 6th inning

Bottom 7th inning, Gamecocks still leading 8-0. A new pitcher for Cornell, and he starts off by getting Burgess and Callil to strike out. Then he hits Dallas Beaver - who came in at 3B for Wimmer - and then pinch hitter Anthony Amicangelo singles. Heinrich then reaches safely on a throwing error by the Cornell 3B, and he and Amicangelo advances to 3B and 2B on the error, and Beaver advances to score. Bryant Bowen then pinch-hits for Eyster, but strikes out for the final out.

Gamecock 9-0, end of 7th inning

Top 8th inning, Andrew Peters comes in for John Gilreath, who pitched a perfect 7th with 2 Ks. Peters struggles off the bat - walking the first 2 Cornell batters and then giving up a single to load the bases with 0 outs. The Gamecocks then record the 1st out on a fielder's choice, but the Big Red scores their first run. The next Cornell batter singles to score the 2nd run, and Peters' day is done: Josiah Sightler - who got into Friday's game as a pinch hitter - comes in to relief pitch.

Sightler gives up a ground-out sacrifice to score another run, and after hitting the next batter, Josiah strikes out the next batter to end the side.

Gamecocks 9-3 bottom 8th inning

Bottom 8th inning, the Gamecocks start off their inning by Clarke getting hit by pitch. Allen reaches on a fielder's choice, but Clarke is out at 2B, 1 out.

Cornell goes to their bullpen, and the new Big Red pitcher faces Brennan Milone - he hits a double to left for his first hit as a Gamecock - congrats Brennan!!

Allen advanced to 3B. Burgess then grounds out to 3B for the 2nd out, but not before driving in Allen for the run. Callil is HBP, but then Beaver strikes out for the final out of the inning.

Gamecocks 10-3 through 8

Top of 9th inning:

Sightler is back on the mound. He strikes out the side, all swinging!! Josiah closes out his appearance with 4 straight strikeouts!! The Gamecocks (10-4) win the 2nd game and the best-of-three series against Cornell. Sightler had scuffled last season platooning at 1B, but we may have found a pitcher in him. Thomas Farr (3-0) gets the win going 6.0 innings allowing only 1 hit with 6 strikeouts and 2 walks.

Gamecocks win 10-3
