SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN
The Wildcats won 1-of-3 games against Omaha in Arizona this past weekend. Northwestern won the series finale, 7-2, as Shawn Goosenberg went 3-for-4 with three RBI while Charlie Maxwell had a pair of hits and scored two runs. Tyler Uberstine earned the win on the mound, striking out five in five innings while allowing just four hits and a run. Goosenberg went 7-for-14 at the plate with five RBI on the weekend.

SCOUTING NORTHWESTERN
Carolina is 7-5 all-time against Northwestern but the two teams have not faced off since the 1995 season when Northwestern defeated the Gamecocks 13-5. All 12 games have been played in Columbia between 1986-95. Carolina won 2-of-3 games against Northwestern in the 1990 season, winning the final two contests by scores of 8-5 and 9-2.

EARLY OUTBURST
The Gamecocks have taken early leads in all four wins this season, scoring 25 runs in the first three innings, including a six-run first on Opening Day and a five-run first on the Saturday of the Holy Cross series. Carolina put up nine runs in the first three frames in the 14-3 win over Presbyterian and on the season, has outscored the competition, 38-7.

SEC LEADERS
As a team, Carolina is 10th in batting average, seventh in ERA and third in fielding percentage in the league. George Callil is tied for eighth with a .462 batting average, while Carmen Mlodzinski and Brannon Jordan are tied for the conference lead with a 0.00 ERA. Noah Campbell leads the SEC with seven stolen bases and Andrew Eyster is eighth in slugging percentage (.917). On the mound, Brett Kerry is tied for the league lead with 12 strikeouts. Jordan also has the lone complete game in the conference.

GAMECOCKS ARE THIEVES ON THE BASES
The Gamecocks are 15-for-17 on the base paths in the first four games, led by Noah Campbell's seven stolen bases. Campbell had three stolen bases in the season opener, the most by a Gamecock since Dom Thompson-Williams in 2016. Braylen Wimmer also is a perfect 3-for-3 in stolen bases.

5-1 Northwestern in the bottom of the 10th.

Final, 5-2 Northwestern.  Man, I hate to lose to a Northern school in baseball.

Gamecocks Baseball loses Game 1 of their home series with Northwestern 5-2 in extra innings. Gamecocks starter Carmen Mlodzinski pitched solidly for his 2nd Friday start of the season, going 7.0 innings allowing 3 hits and only 1 run - earned - with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk. But the Gamecock bats couldn't warm up in the chilly northern air to provide Carmen run support: we had the most hits of the game 7 to 5, but struck out 11 times and left 11 men on base.

The Yardcocks hung to a slim 1-0 lead until the final inning for Mlodzinski, when the Wildcats led off with a double, and then a 2-out single drove in their first run for the game. That was it for Mlod - he pitched 97 times in the outing, 61 going for strikes.

The bullpen could not keep Northwestern at bay, as with the score tied 1-1 in the top of the 10th, back-to-back walks to lead off from Daniel Lloyd (0-1) spelled doom - a 1 -out single scored the go-ahead run, and Parker Coyne relieved Lloyd. Coyne gets the 2nd out of the inning on a strikeout looking, but then he walks the next 2 batters himself, loading the bases and then forcing in a Northwestern run to make the score 3-1 Wildcats, then gives up a 2-RBI single to account for the balance of their runs scored in the game.

In the bottom 10th, the Gamecocks try to mount a response: after Myers is HBP, Amicangelo hits a RBI double to pull to 5-2. Clarke Ks and Eyster pops up for 2 outs, then Allen singles to put Gamecocks on the corner bases and give the frozen crowd remaining some hope, but Callil grounds out to 2B to end the rally and the game.

The Gamecocks (4-1) return to the Diamond tomorrow for Game #2 looking to even the series up, with Brett Kerry (1-0) on the mound. The game's first pitch is at 2 PM.......
