Will Muschamp, Kirby Smart battling for 2 of state of Georgia’s best recruits

Jan. 06, 2016

Will Muschamp and Kirby Smart, both of whom are branches on the Nick Saban coaching tree, look for many of the same qualities in a recruit.

So it’s no wonder Muschamp and Smart are squaring off for two of the best 2017 prospects from the state of Georgia: 4-star cornerback Jamyest Williams and 3-star defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt.

Williams, who committed to South Carolina at the start of football season, grew up in Athens and has long-standing ties to UGA. An interest leaving his own legacy helped lead to the commitment to the Gamecocks, but the hometown connection and pressure to stay with the state’s best prospects will draw him back to campus for an official visit later this month.

“I pretty much always knew at the end of the day UGA was gonna get an OV,” Williams told DawgNation. “I grew up a Dawg fan. Had to.”

Wyatt first committed to South Carolina in June, after landing a camp offer. A little over a month later, the 6-foot-4, 300-pound prospect from Towers High School in Decatur, Ga., was camping at Georgia. By August, he de-committed from South Carolina and flipped to the in-state school. However, Muschamp and the Gamecocks’ coaching staff never relented.

“They told me they’re going to always be trying to get me back to the Gamecocks. … I’ve still got a place to go, if I feel like it,” Wyatt said.

The timing of Williams’ official return to Georgia has yet to be nailed down, though his South Carolina stop is set for the final weekend of the month. Wyatt is set to start the month with a trip to Georgia before moving on to South Carolina and then Florida.

South Carolina is also rumored to be in line for an official visit from Georgia defensive end commitment Robert Beal, a 4-star prospect from Suwanee, Ga. But a number of other schools are said to also be involved.

Looking ahead to the 2018 cycle, there are plenty of 2018 prospects with offers from South Carolina and Georgia, but it’s a little too early to decipher which ones are going to sign with either South Carolina or Georgia.

Five-star running back Zamir White, who’s from Scotland County High School in Laurinberg, N.C., lists the two schools among his favorites, along with Clemson and North Carolina.

In December, South Carolina offered 3-star athlete Marquez Ezzard, a wide receiver from Stockbridge (Ga.) High School. Though there is some interest in the Gamecocks, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound prospect was offered by Georgia on Thursday.

Another 5-star, defensive end Xavier Thomas, once had Georgia on his list of favorites, but he’s going to sign with South Carolina or Clemson. The prospect from Florence, S.C., is set to transfer to IMG Academy for his senior season.
