SANDESTIN, Fla.—As the shape of the new college football postseason continues to evolve, the sport’s marquee game continues to define itself.
A Bowl Championship Series source told Sporting News on Tuesday that the yet-to-be-branded national championship game will be bid out to cities over the length of the series' television contract and not rotate among BCS bowls, as it has in the previous 14 seasons.
University presidents want to make the game a stand-alone event from the rest of the bowl season—not only on the field, but in advertising and marketing. A BCS source told SN last week that revenue possibilities for the game are “astronomical.”
