Beamer gets a chance to talk Rattler

Dec. 15, 2021

For the first time since South Carolina shook the college football world with the signing of transfer quarterback Spencer Rattler, head coach Shane Beamer was able to speak publicly on the move. Speaking with College Sports Today on ESPNU Radio on Wednesday afternoon, Beamer shared the excitement of landing Rattler, a transfer QB from Oklahoma, along with Sooners tight end Austin Stogner.

Beamer got to know Rattler while he was an assistant coach on Lincoln Riley’s Oklahoma staff. “I think it’s huge,” Beamer said. “I know it’s huge. One, because of the kind of player he is. I was around him at Oklahoma. I know what kind of player he is and what kind of person he is, and I’m excited about adding him to our roster.

But then just his name and the reputation he has and the excitement and buzz it generated for South Carolina football was amazing.” Rattler and Stogner both announced their commitments to the Gamecocks late Monday night before officially signing financial aid agreements on Tuesday night the eve of college football’s early signing period.

I sure hope he matured from the time of that Netflix showing. I know it's been several years but it takes quite a few that age and with the money he's received a lot longer than others to grow up.

I can’t hold what a kid said or did at 17/18 years old against him.  I can’t hold him not getting up to cheer his team on when being benched.  What I do know is this kid going into last year was the the favorite to be the #1 overall draft pick and to win a few awards.  At 19/20 years old you have a kid that has to be thinking how this hurts him going forward and everything else involved when being benched.  What I do see as a bright side is he didn’t run to the media or his teammates right away and start talking transfer.  He waited until the season was over.  Beamer seems to think highly about him and that’s enough for me.
