Behind the commitment to South Carolina
June 05, 2017
The 3-star safety from Cane Bay High School (Summerville, S.C.) visited with his mother, two older sisters and younger sister. While he participated in the camp, they toured school and met with academic advisors.
Afterwards, his older sisters gave him their blessing.
“That reassurance they had and the feedback they gave me kind of solidified my decision,” Roderick said.
And he was more than ready to make a commitment to South Carolina’s 2018 class.
“It was always in the back of my head,” Roderick said. “They always were the leader, an apparent leader at that.”
He added, “There was no better time for me to do it. That was a big moment for me and my family.”
Duke, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and North Carolina State were among the 22 schools to offer. But the relationships Roderick shares with coach Will Muschamp and defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson were too strong to overcome.
“I know who they are as individuals off the field. They’re great role models, but just being around them, just getting a feel for the way they coach, that’s something I want to be a part of, so I just went ahead and pulled the trigger,” Roderick said.
Several South Carolina players have connected with Roderick, including quarterback Jake Bentley, safety Jaylin Dickerson, tight end Will Register and defensive back Jameyst Williams.
Wide receiver commitment Darius Rush is counted as a “good friend.” On Saturday night, Roderick exchanged texts with linebacker commitment Ernest Jones IV.
Roderick is also close with 2018 quarterback target Dakereon Joyner, who announces his decision on Father’s Day
