South Carolina’s offense was jumpstarted with the insertion of freshman Jake Bentley into the lineup at quarterback. The Gamecocks (4-4, 2-4) have put up two of their top three games in total yards under Bentley, and recruits are taking notice of his potential.
It’s appealing to wide receiver targets, including four-star commitment Shi Smith (Union/Union), that the Gamecocks are improving on that side of the football, especially in the passing game.
“I love how Jake Bentley throws the ball,” Smith said, following the 24-21 win over Tennessee. “He comes out like a commander telling everyone what they need to do. It’s like he’s not even a freshman. He just keeps throwing the ball, keep continuing to do good things.”
While the result of the game may have been surprising to those in Las Vegas, it wasn’t a shock at all for Smith.
“I knew when they came out here they were going to win,” Smith said. “I kept saying they were going to win, and I feel pretty good about my boys.”
Union County is 6-4 so far this season but has a perfect 4-0 record in the region.
“Right now, we’re the number one seed,” Smith said, “and I plan on making it back down here for the state championship game.”
Smith holds a 0.9074 rating in the 247Sports Composite and is considered the No. 241 player in the country. He holds a 93 rating by 247Sports, and is the No. 151 player nationally.
