Here's an e-mail sent to the Principal of River Bluff HS from the President of the Columbia Chess Club. Tyler is my Grandson.

Sorry the picture is blurred for some reason, the e-mail reads:

Principal Smith,

I'm proud to report that River Bluff High School is the 2025 South Carolina High School Chess Champions!

On March 22, 2025 190 players assembled representing over 90 schools from across the State. River Bluff was represented by Tyler Murrah, Daniel Lim, Dheer Chheda, Rushaan Sotimager, Brian Zheng, Alex Ziegler, Logan Santos, Ravi Narendhiran, and Sanjhay Kodeeswaren.

River Bluff finished a clear two points ahead of second place Governor's School for Science and Math (GSSM), and it's the first time since 2003 that the High School Championship was not won by either GSSM or Daniel High School.

In addition to River Bluff upsetting some chess dynasties, Tyler Murrah also had the special distinction of finishing in 4th place individual, which will advance him to the final competition on April 5, 2025, where he will compete to qualify for nationals and the title of individual State Champion.

This is the first time that any school from the Midlands of South Carolina has won the State Championship and the Columbia Chess Club is particularly proud of what their efforts have done to raise the reputation of chess in the area!

Well played all,

Brandon Jordan
Columbia Chess Club

(Tyler is my grandson)

Congratulations Blitzkrieg. Well played by your grandson. I know you must be very proud. That's a very impressive accomplishment by the grandBlitzer!

If he starts getting a "big head" let him know, I'm pretty sure I can take him in Tic Tac Toe.

On a side note, as a Freshman at RBHS when he went to the chess club's first meeting he beat the club's President, a senior. The President asked for a rematch, Tyler beat him again. At the second meeting Tyler played 8 other members of the chess club at the same time (all of them higher grades) and beat all 8 of them. He was then elected President of the chess club as a Freshman.

Just as a side note: I had to look up River Bluff HS as I haven’t lived in Columbia for decades. It’s off Corley Mill rd. Right where it was built, there were some sick Mt. Bike trails in the woods between Corley Mill rd and the River. Used to hit those all the time when I was at USC in the 90’s.

Yep, I rode there as well. The school itself is huge, it even has a Starbucks in it. It's often referred to as "River Bluff University."
