Porter Rooks provides feedback on South Carolina
Porter Rooks, one of the top young prospects in the country, already boasts an impressive offer list, which includes Alabama, Auburn, Louisville, Miami, South Carolina and Virginia Tech.
The 6-foot-1, 180-pound wide receiver is about to wrap up his freshman year at Providence Day School in Charlotte, N.C., so he’s got plenty of time to make a decision.
His brother, former Clemson basketball player Patrick Rooks, is among the folks advising him through the recruiting process.
“He tells me always to make sure you’re keeping in contact with the coaches, looking at this, looking at that,” Porter said, “Because he committed early, I don’t want to make that mistake. I want to take all of my time and make sure that school is the right fit for me.”
The Gamecocks offered earlier this spring while he was on campus.
“It was good to talk to Coach Muschamp in his office. That’s just always personal, so they’re definitely always building a relationship,” he said. “We’re talking pretty often.”
This summer, the younger Rooks will hit the road, to check out some more schools. South Carolina could score a return visit.
A couple of factors will be considered as he moves further along with his recruitment.
“Just the honesty of the coaches, not trying to sugarcoat anything, just telling me how it is. … I just want the school to sell itself, not just the coaches telling me this and that,” Rooks said. “I just want to get a good feel for the school.”
The newest Gamecock speaks
Three-star small forward Justin Minaya, who committed to play basketball at South Carolina on Wednesday night, joined Phil Kornblut later that evening to discuss his decision.
“They obviously had a very successful year last year,” Minaya said. “I know that they have a lot of momentum, going into the future also. After that year, there’s going to be a lot of hype with them.
“I just liked it, even if they didn’t make the Final Four. I like the school. I like the people there. I like all of my teammates there.”
Minaya, who attends Old Tappan High School in Westwood, N.J., also considered Illinois, Seton Hall and UMass.
