Bryce Thompson’s future with South Carolina takes a detour

Dutch Fork coach Tom Knotts said Bryce Thompson “will not sign at this point” with South Carolina when the second National Signing Day begins Wednesday.
Knotts wouldn’t answer any more questions about Thompson’s situation on Monday. The receiver/defensive back committed to South Carolina on Dec. 13, but there were questions whether he would qualify for the Gamecocks.
Last week, Thompson said he thought would be able to work through academic issues and hoped to sign Wednesday.
Marshall has been pushing hard for Thompson if he wasn’t able to sign with USC. Members of the Thundering Herd coaching staff, including head coach Doc Holliday went to Thompson’s basketball game Tuesday.
“They (Marshall) are recruiting me pretty hard. But I am still committed to Carolina 100 percent,” Thompson said after his basketball game against Lexington last week. “Marshall has been in the picture just for a backup. If USC doesn’t take me as an academic redshirt, or if it ever came down to that, which I highly doubt, then Marshall would be a good option instead of going to JUCO. That is all Marshall is, a backup plan in case I came short of my grades but I know for sure I am not.
“Coach T-Rob (South Carolina defensive coordinator) said he had a scholarship for the longest time. He kept his word, and I am going to keep mine. I am going to keep my grades up.”
Thompson has been elevated to four-star status by Rivals and 247Sports in their final evaluations for the class of 2018.
During his senior season, Thompson rushed for 1,368 yards, caught 44 passes for 630 yards and 38 total touchdowns in helping the Silver Foxes to their second consecutive title. He also had 27 tackles, an interception and blocked a kick on defense.
Thompson earned Most Outstanding Player honors in the Shrine Bowl after catching seven passes for 165 yards and a TD.
Thompson might not be the only USC commit not to sign Wednesday. Irmo’s Ronnie Jamison, who is at Highland Junior College, might not sign according to his high school coach Reggie Kennedy.
Highland JC coach Aaron Arnold told Phil Kornblut that he knows Jamison wants to go to USC but hasn’t talked to him in a while.
247Sports ranks Jamison as the fifth-best receiver in junior college for class of 2018. He caught 28 passes for 313 yards and four touchdowns this year despite missing three games because of injury. Jamison also averaged 28 yards on nine kickoff returns.
