Caldwell gives final update on eve of announcement

National Signing Day #2 Wednesday stands to be big for the USC Gamecocks. The Gamecocks are expected to sign three previously committed prospects in DE Jordan Burch and DT Alex Huntley of Hammond School and RB ZaQuandre White of Iowa Western JC. And they are the big favorites to land WR Ger-Cari Caldwell of Northwestern when he announces at 10:00 AM.
Caldwell took official visits to USC and Tennessee the last two weekends and he narrowed his decision to those to SEC East rivals.
“Yes, I do know basically who it’s going to be, just got to finalize everything with my mom and everything like that,” Caldwell said Tuesday. “We discussed it last night but we’re feeling pretty comfortable about who it is going to be.”
Caldwell was offered by the Gamecocks in early December after a season of 51 catches for 744 yards and 6 touchdowns that earned him a spot on the Shrine Bowl team. This past weekend he was able to hear from the Gamecocks just how they feel about him.
“The visit was great. The coaching staff relationship was great,” Caldwell said. “Coach Muschamp, Coach BMac (Bryan McClendon) and coach (Bobby) Bentley all talked about things regarding the school and stuff like that. As far as using me, I would be used more as the outside receiver, going to get the jump balls, breaking off the short routes like quick slants and critical third-down plays.”
Caldwell said Muschamp has been in touch all week and he talked with his Tennessee recruiter Chris Weinke on Sunday. The Vols also have made a compelling pitch to him.
“I’m needed there,” he said. “They are lacking at the receiver position at the moment and I’m needed. They need a bit time receiver like myself.”
Caldwell came from relative obscurity in the recruiting world going into his senior season to a true Power 5 level prospect. Some of his other offers included Duke, Virginia, NC State, Northwestern, Virginia Tech, Wake Forest, Baylor, Illinois, Georgia Tech and East Carolina. And how he’s come to the end of the recruiting road.
“It feels great actually,” Caldwell said. “It was stressful at first just trying to figure out who gave me the best home feel, who had the best academics and such thinks like that as far as competing at the highest level and having the academics. It’s been a pretty good process.”
The 247Sports composite ranks Caldwell as a 3-star prospect, the #92 receiver nationally and the #8 prospect in South Carolina for the 2020 class.
