California teammates react to Carolina offer

Jan. 9,2015

South Carolina ventured out of its typical recruiting territory on Thursday and made offers to a pair of high school teammates that are in the other USC’s backyard. Class of 2017 four-star athlete Greg Johnson and 2018 wide receiver Jalen Hall, both products of Hawkins High School in Los Angeles, Calif., can each claim an offer from the Gamecocks

Their offensive coordinator, knowing both players are intrigued by playing in the Southeastern Conference, sent their film to South Carolina and running backs coach Everette Sands responded. Not long after did received their film, Sands informed the coach that both players had an offer.

Neither player has a tie to South Carolina - no family in the area, no vacations or anything of the like - but both were intrigued and appreciative of the offer.

“I know that coach Spurrier is a great coach,” Johnson said. “They’re in the SEC and that’s a great conference. I’m interested in South Carolina. I’m really interested in any school that offers, but I think South Carolina is a great opportunity for me.”

Johnson is ranked as the No. 1 player in the state of California in the 2017 class and is considered the No. 16 player in the country overall. He already holds offers from Southern Cal and UCLA. All five early Crystal Ball projections have him to the Trojans.

The 5-foot-10, 185-pounder says that he hasn’t been on any visits yet but hopes to attend some junior days in the coming months.

Hall doesn’t have a Southern Cal offer just yet but he does have a slew of schools interested in him after the completion of his freshman year. The 6-foot-3, 175-pounder holds early offers from Miami, Ole Miss, Tennessee, UCLA, Washington and others.

The offer from South Carolina was one that took him a little bit off guard.

“It’s really exciting,” Hall said. “It wasn’t something I was expecting. My coach just let me know. I’d love to visit. I’m open to any school right now. I’ll start to narrow my focus on schools maybe in my junior year.”

South Carolina did find a prospect in California recently adding junior college linebacker Ernest Hawkins from Hartnell College in Salinas, Calif.
