Carey Rich stops discuss his new role with the Gamecocks (AUDIO)

SPORTSTALK April 22, 2022

There are few people that know the inner workings of basketball in the state of South Carolina better than Carey Rich. Evidently the word got back to new USC head men’s basketball coach Lamont Paris, as one of his first duties on the job was to bring Rich into the fold. The former Gamecock point guard and SEC legend has been named the special assistant to the head coach. In the position, Rich will focus on community and alumni relations, along with assisting in on-campus recruiting. It’s clearly a role he’s been prepping his entire life to fulfill.

Rich recently dropped by SportsTalk to discuss his return to USC in an official capacity. He noted that he’s not quite comfortable with the title “coach”, saying that will take, “some getting used to.” He also laid out the framework as to how he’ll help the USC coaching staff in recruiting players across the Palmetto State.

"After playing one season at Western Carolina, Rich returned home and was a three-year letterwinner for the Gamecocks from 1993-95. He scored 784 career points and dished out 340 assists playing in 79 career games. Rich ranks sixth all-time in Carolina history with 4.30 assists per game, and his 5.16 assists per game during the 1994 season are seventh-most in a single season in program history. As a senior, he led the team in scoring averaging 13.4 points per game. Rich served as team captain his final two seasons in Garnet and Black."

I'm sure he is absolutely completely totally truly 100%, utterly over the top, out and out excited for this wonderful, exciting, opportunity.

Hopefully he's a better coach than radio personality....
