Carolina to allow alcohol sales at sporting events, details, timeline for rollout

Dec. 17, 2019

Expanded alcohol sales to the general public are set to come for South Carolina fans at Williams-Brice Stadium, Colonial Life Arena and Founders Park in the very near future. The new policy, presented to and approved by the University of South Carolina board of trustees’ executive and governance committee Tuesday, is expected to be approved by the full board in the afternoon. I know it's a money thing, but I don't like it. I take the family and I can see bad things coming.

On the other hand. Being able to buy beer inside the stadium will likely cut down on the binge drinking ahead of t game, and the amount of liquor that gets smuggled in.

The added revenue generated should more than compensate for being able to add extra security as well.

Food for thought, many schools that have started to allow the sale of alcohol have reported decreased alcohol related incidents.

Absolutely. Not that it will completely stop it or curtail binge drinking, but it will reduce the number of people who decide to slam 4 or 5  beers 20 min before the game and sneak in a pint of booze. IMO those are the ones that are generally causing trouble because it all hits at once. Also, I fully expect beer to be outrageously priced meaning most people will only buy a few.

This will not be a major money maker for the schools. They are using booze to inhance the so called fan experience. This will be a test run to see if the schools or school can cover the cost of extra security and other little extras you have to have when selling booze.

Security will be challenging with this decision.  Hopefully, there will not be  increased student  arrests.
