Catching up with 4-star DT Rick Sandidge
January 24, 2018
CONCORD, N.C. – The light is at the end of the tunnel for 4-star defensive tackle Rick Sandidge, who’s now two weeks away from announcing his decision.
Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina are the finalists for the No. 13 defensive tackle in the Class of 2018. On Wednesday morning at Concord (N.C.) High School, Sandidge (6-5, 288) shared the latest in his recruitment with SEC Country.
“I feel at home at all three of these schools,” Sandidge said. “I’ve just got to get the feeling to where I best fit, to where I can get playing time and I feel like, like all these schools have told me that. That’s another reason why they’re all in it.”
The Gamecocks will host him for his third and final official visit this weekend. Defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson, defensive line coach Lance Thompson and running backs coach Bobby Bentley were in the area to meet with Sandidge and his family on Tuesday night.
Several coaches from Georgia stopped by on Monday, a day after he wrapped up his official visit to North Carolina. Sandidge had an official visit to Athens the previous weekend.
After this weekend’s trip to Columbia, Sandidge will weigh the pros and cons of each school with his family before making a decision. He’ll notify the coaches at the schools then wait until National Signing Day to go public with the news.
South Carolina recruiting details
During the sit-down with the Gamecock coaches, Sandidge said they were mostly “catching up and talking about the depth chart.”
Robinson, Sandidge added, was impressive.
“It’s hard to explain. He can talk, in a good way, he can talk,” Sandidge said. “I don’t know how to explain it. … He knows what he’s talking about, I guess he’s been doing this for a long time, well, he has been doing this for a long time.
“He just knows what he’s talking about, really.”
It helps South Carolina’s chances that Sandidge has good relationship with several coaches, including the head man, Will Muschamp. The same could be said for Thompson.
“I just know he’s going to be my position coach and I can trust him, if I was to go there,” Sandidge said.
Ditto for Bentley, who serves as the Gamecocks area recruiter.
This weekend, Sandidge looks forward to spending more time with the players, getting to know the guys who could be his future teammates. Over the last several months, he’s spoke with some of the 2018 signees.
Among the more experienced players, Sandidge has had conversations with Bryson Allen-Williams and D.J. Wonnum.
This, that and the other
The trip to Chapel Hill went well for the Tar Heels.
“I had a really good visit there,” Sandidge said. “I had a good conversation with the coaches.”
What about Georgia?
“The coaches, I have a good relationship with [defensive line] coach [Tray] Scott, but I don’t really want to make a decision off a coach,” Sandidge said. “I want to make a decision off feeling at home and I feel at home there.”
The Dawgs recent bout of success won’t be a determining factor, though it doesn’t hurt their chances of adding him to their already strong 2018 class.
“I don’t even care about Georgia going to the [national championship]. I mean, yeah, it’s nice. … They’re in there
