Catching up with 4-star tackle Dylan Wonnum

Why South Carolina stands out
Two reasons. Well, three, if you count offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Bryan McClendon, who recruits Wonnum (6-5, 291) and the rest of his teammates from Tucker High School.
“I would say the coaches, Coach Muschamp and Coach [Eric] Wolford. Coach Wolford, he — well, both of them are cool guys to talk to. They talk to me a lot. They hit me up every day,” Wonnum said.
From his older brother
Wonnum’s older brother, D.J., is a sophomore defensive end/outside linebacker for the Gamecocks. His peers recently tabbed him as a permanent team captain.
D.J. doesn’t apply much recruiting pressure, though he would like for Dylan to join him in Columbia.
“Just take my time,” Dylan said of D.J.’s message. “I can go to the last hour if I want to. Just take my time.”
That’s a big deal for Dylan, to not have much pressure from his older brother.
“It’s very important, because I don’t want anybody making the decision for me or anything like that, so I’m not going there for him,” he said. “I’m going there for me, to better me, for me to get to the pros and stuff like that.”
The pros
There are plenty of pros for Dylan, when it comes to South Carolina. Again, the relationships with the coaches are important.
Out of all the coaches he’s met along the way, the Gamecocks have established the best relationship. Wolford, in particular, has made a really good impression.
“I guess it would be him explaining. He’s a very hands-on-person,” Dylan said. “When he’s explaining something, he can show me and everything, so I would say that. No other O-line coach did that, but him, so he’s going to actually show you what it is.”
What’s D.J. told him about Wolford?
“He needs you. He wants you that bad. So that’s about it [and] he’s a good coach,” Dylan said.
