After already making stops this season to see Xavier Thomas and Derion Kendrick, two of the top 2018 prospects in the state of South Carolina, it was time for SEC Country to go by Lewisville High School in Richburg, S.C. to meet with 4-star defensive tackle Josh Belk.
This season, Belk’s been to Clemson for the Louisville game and South Carolina “around the ECU game” to meet with defensive line coach Lance Thompson.
“I watched them fight the whole game and the energy that the coaches brought and the players brought to each other. I liked that,” Belk said of the Clemson trip.
At South Carolina, Thompson “showed a lot of love.”
“I feel like they’ve got to rebuild a little bit. I think they can do it,” Belk said. “I like those coaches. I think they’re good,”
The 6-foot-3, 292-pound junior is the No. 138 overall prospect in the country. In the state of South Carolina’s loaded 2018 class, he’s rated fourth-best.
Belk is one of many in-state 2018 targets for Muschamp.
“By me going down there, (Muschamp) always told me that he loved defense and he’s one of the ones that wants to go get it,” Belk said.
South Carolina and Clemson are the only schools he’s visited, but Florida and Ohio State are among the schools he hopes to also see.
SEC East battle?South Carolina and Tennessee are pursuing a handful of the same 2017 targets, including three-star defensive end Matthew Butler
Earlier this week, Butler spoke in-depth with SEC Country reporter Jesse Simonton. Butler said he’s already taken official visits to Penn State and Duke and that Tennessee is guaranteed an official. N.C. State and Texas A&M could secure the final two.
If it’s not one of the two in-state schools, Tennessee might be the team to beat.
“You see guys like Derek Barnett, who is a great player. And (Cory) Vereen, who has proven himself to be a good player as well,” Butler said. “And you see those guys and I’d be playing that same position, so you look at how did they play? What responsibilities are they asked to do?”
Muschamp spotted in FlorenceSince we’re on the topic of defensive linemen, we’ll slide in a mention on Thomas, whose school hosted St. James High School. The No. 1 ranked in-state prospect for 2018 was watched by Muschamp on Thursday night at Wilson High School in Florence, S.C.

Saturday’s plansThe following prospects are scheduled to attend Saturday’s game against Massachusetts.
