Christmas wish list for 2019 and beyond
December 22, 2017
With 80 percent of the 2018 class signed, sealed and delivered, South Carolina’s coaching staff will turn its attention to prospects from 2019 and 2020.
The Gamecocks already have three commitments on board for the 2019 cycle and there’s still plenty of work to be done between now and next December.
Queen City supremacy
One of South Carolina’s three 2019 pledges is 3-star defensive tackle Jaylen Nichols, who’s on board as an offensive lineman. The 6-foot-5, 300-pound prospect from Myers Park High School is one of several Gamecocks targets from Charlotte, N.C.
The best of the bunch is 5-star running back Quavaris Crouch, the No. 24 overall prospect in the country, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Crouch (6-2, 224) lists South Carolina among his favorites, along with Alabama, Clemson, Michigan and Stanford.
Just east of the city in Monroe is 4-star quarterback Sam Howell, the No. 5 pro-style passer in the country. North Carolina and North Carolina State, along with South Carolina, are among the schools under consideration from Howell (6-1, 217).
Another quarterback from Charlotte, 3-star Garrett Shrader, was in Columbia on Saturday for bowl practice. The 6-5, 200-pound quarterback is the No. 10 dual-threat QB in the country and the Gamecocks are firmly in contention.
Three-star wide receiver Nolan Groulx (6-foot, 185) is one of the most productive players from the Charlotte area. Earlier this year, he listed South Carolina as his leader.
Win the state
There are only a handful of in-state prospects on the Gamecocks radar for 2019. Anderson-T.L. Hanna defensive end Zacch Pickens (6-3, 244) is the top-rated one in the bunch. South Carolina and Clemson figure to be the primary contenders.
Michel Dukes, a 3-star running back from Charleston-First Baptist, has offers from South Carolina, North Carolina, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. The 5-10, 190-pound prospect is heavily favored for the Gamecocks, according to the 247Sports Crystal Ball.
Three 2020 in-state defensive linemen have been offered by the Gamecocks: Tonka Hemingway (Conway), Jordan Burch (Columbia) and Alex Huntley (Columbia).
