Christopher Smith talks Travaris Robinson; Gamecocks mid-year enrollees report for duty
Jan. 03.2017
Over the years, South Carolina defensive coordinator/defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson has built a reputation as a quality coach and recruiter.
Four-star cornerback Christopher Smith, who was offered by the Gamecocks in the fall, has heard plenty of good things.
“T-Rob, he’s really cool,” Smith said. “He’s really, really cool. He has a great relationship with one of my coaches.
“I heard he’s the best in the business. That’s what I hear from everybody. Whenever I say I’ve got a South Carolina offer, everybody says, ‘T-Rob is the best in the game.’ He’s a really cool dude and I figure he knows what he’s talking about.”
Smith also had a good review of Muschamp.
“He’s really a straightforward guy. He’s not going to sugarcoat it. He’s not going to lie,” Smith said. “He lets me know that he wants me and he really likes me. When I talked to him, that’s when he offered me.
“He said, ‘You’re either going to join us or we’re going to beat you.’ He was straightforward. I really liked that. I like the program and I like both of those individuals.”
The 3-star prospect from Hapeville Charter in Atlanta is the No. 40-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2018.
Reporting for duty
Members of South Carolina’s 2017 signing class will begin reporting for duty on Tuesday. Three-star offensive tackle Summie Carlay (Laurens, S.C.) has confirmed his plans, so has 4-star defensive end M.J. Webb (Madison, Ga.).
Four-star wide receiver OrTre Smith (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) won’t move until Jan. 9, the first day of class. Smith will fly to Texas on Thursday to participate in the U.S. Army All-American festivities, even though he’s sitting out the game with an injury.
Along with 3-star safety Jaylin Dickerson (Southern Pines, N.C.), Carlay, Smith and Webb will be roommates for the spring semester.
Kyshaun Bryan committed to South Carolina last spring.
Developments at running back
Three-star running back Kyshaun Bryan is still listed on the South Carolina commitment list, though it continues to become increasingly apparent that he won’t sign with the Gamecocks in February.
On Monday, Phil Kornblut wrote about 2018 running back E.J. Humphrey, who indicated that will be the case.
“I have spoken on several occasion with (running backs) coach (Bobby) Bentley and he has advised me and my coach, Robert Mustar, that I am high in their list,” Humphrey said. “They are not going to take any running back in 2017 and will take two in 2018.”
Humphrey, an unranked prospect from Powdersville (S.C.) High School, also is in contact with Virginia Tech, N.C. State and North Carolina. He accounted for 2,061 all-purpose yards and 30 touchdowns this fall.
