Goose Creek High School lineman Gerald Turner has committed to play football at South Carolina, Gators coach Chuck Reedy said today.
Turner, 6-2 and 250 pounds, also had interest from Clemson, North Carolina and Georgia Tech, Reedy said.
“I think South Carolina is projecting him as an Eric Norwood type, a guy who can play linebacker or defensive end or both,” said Reedy, referring to the former Gamecock star. “Gerald runs very well, better than 4.6 for the 40-yard dash, and he’s very strong. He can play a lot of places. He could very easily get up to 275 pounds.”
Turner is an all-region and all-state player, and was the Division II-AAAA defensive player of the year last season as the Gators won the state title. Turner is also a four-year starter and an “excellent student,” Reedy said.
