It’s pretty well known that Clowney takes a play off every now and then and coaches have said he hasn’t yet reached his full work ethic. Of course, this is mostly because he knows he’s ready to be in the NFL but the rules won’t allow it. That being the case, Clowney seems determined to prove a defensive player can win the Heisman. If it’s true that he hasn’t given 100% on every play he’s been in there, it’s flat out scary to think of what kind of numbers he will put up next season with a real motivation to win the Heisman. Barring an injury, he’s going to be the #1 pick in the draft (or top 5 at the very worst), so he doesn’t really have much to worry about as far as draft position, even if he played at 80% all season. So his only real personal goal is to win the Heisman and you can tell he wants it. I send my condolences to all our opposing QBs next season.

On a separate note, given all the hype Clowney will have going into the season and all the buzz over his hit against Michigan, you know he’s going to get double-teamed on almost every play. I wonder how this will affect his numbers. Taylor will be gone so defenses don’t have to account for him anymore. Anyone else on our D line that will serve as suitable enough distraction to keep from having Clowney double-teamed the entire season?

About this not giving 100% every play…. the guy plays a lot of downs! Think back over the year and time and time again when we needed something special in the fourth quarter, there was Clowney. Maybe his pacing himself actually allows him to be that much better late in the game. And its not like people are burning by him as he does nothing. I do think he paces himself. But I also think he pours it on late when others are gasping for air. At the same time I’ve read other coaches making statements that Clowney’s moptor is always running and he wears people out. At any rate, his year was phenomenal considering missing one whole game and playing injured in others!
