Whatever his position, sophomore standout’s job is to ‘go get the quarterback’
Spurrier said last week that the Gamecocks want to use their sophomore defensive end at multiple positions, including middle linebacker.
“Inside, outside, middle linebacker, all over the place,” Spurrier said.
“No, no, no” Lawing said.
So, are these smoke screens? No, probably just semantics.
Lawing knows of no plans to put Clowney at middle linebacker but explains how it might look like it at times this season: “We have a Spinner package. It’s what I did with (Eric) Norwood and with Melvin (Ingram).”
In the Spinner package, Clowney is classified as a defensive lineman but will play from a standing position and move along the line of scrimmage based on Lawing’s identification of the offensive line’s intentions.
“We plug him into the pass rush from a standup position,” Lawing said. “He may be standing up in the middle. He may be over a tackle or a guard or he may be outside. It’s not a middle linebacker.”
However, defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward will not close the door on the possibility of some dual-position training that would have Clowney lined up as a true middle linebacker.
“Any time you have a 6-foot-5 young man that can run a 4.5 40, he can play a lot of positions,” Ward said. “What we’re going to try to do during the season is get the best matchup for Jadeveon. If that’s stand him up at linebacker and shoot him in a gap or if that’s put him at end or put him at tackle or putting him at nose, that’s what we’re going to do.” http://www.gogamecocks.com/2012/08/16/272399/clowney-will-play-all-over-in.html
