Gamecocks will face Georgia State at Williams-Brice Stadium Saturday night at 7:30. The Gamecocks are 13.5-point favorites in the first-ever meeting between the programs.
Former South Carolina offensive line coach and interim head coach Shawn Elliott and is 30-30 in five seasons with the Panthers. His best season thus far was last season when the Panthers went 8-5 with a bowl win over Ball State. Elliott is a Camden native and has a team with 20 Palmetto State natives including quarterback Darren Grainger of Conway who transferring in from Furman.
Some key takeaways from Shane Beamer:
Beamer cautioned against taking the Panthers lightly. “No disrespect to Eastern Illinois, who we opened up with last year, but this ain’t Eastern Illinois,” he said. “And we made that very clear with our players this morning. This is a team where 17 of their 22 starters are juniors or seniors, so they’ve played a lot of football together. They beat Tennessee not that long ago. They had a heck of an opportunity to beat Auburn last year at Auburn.” “It’s a very confident team that has gone on the road in the SEC and performed very well,” Beamer continued. “(They) did win one game and had an opportunity to win a second game against an SEC team on the road.”
How Beamer feels on openers
“I love game ones, but game ones stink in a lot of ways, too,” Beamer said Tuesday in his weekly press conference ahead of the South Carolina-Georgia State game. “Just the preparation because there is so much unknown.”
“There are so many unknowns because you’ve been practicing against yourself for so long,” Beamer said. “(Some) guys, it’ll be the first time they go out in an environment like that. We’re playing a lot of new players, freshmen, transfers as well.”
“I love night games (but) I’d play at 9 a.m. every Saturday if I could,” Beamer said. “Just get up and go. The nerves only increase throughout the day, just sitting around waiting.”

Some key takeaways from Shane Beamer:
- Really good practice this morning, Kroeger, Beal-Smith both practiced today, available for Saturday, Rucker still has a ways to go to be ready. Otherwise good on injuries.
- The depth chart released Monday may not be how they open Saturday, they have a lot of flexibility and depth at a lot of positions.
- “No disrespect to Eastern Illinois (last year’s opener), this ain’t Eastern Illinois,” talking about Georgia State and how good they are and capable of beating SEC teams.
- Georgia State was 8th nationally in rushing last season, so his defense will be tested right out of the gate.
- Feels like he has a better handle on things because it’s his second year, but he still has the same anxiety about the opener he had last year.
- Georgia State plays very hard, flies around on defense, is disruptive and physical, lots of tackles for loss, turnovers, and sacks.
