Coach Beamer's Sunday night teleconference quotes
Nov. 20, 2022
Gamecocks' offense was spectacular in Saturday night’s win over 5th-ranked Tennessee scoring touchdowns on nine of ten possessions that weren’t tied to the end of a half. It was one of the greatest offensive performances in Gamecock's history, and it was surprising considering how the offense has struggled under the direction of Marcus Satterfield.
On social media after the game, some Gamecock fans pushed the argument that Satterfield actually did not call the plays, but instead did by a committee of others. Asked to address that on his Sunday night conference call, head coach Shane Beamer scoffed at the notion, saying not only did Satterfield build the gameplan during the week, but he also called every play.
Beamer felt the offense, led by quarterback Spencer Rattler, was about as good as it could possibly be. He also pointed out the defense played very well against a powerful offense, giving up yards but not huge plays down the field. He said the plan was to let the defensive backs go one-on-one on an island with the Tennessee receivers, and he felt they won more battles than they lost and kept the Vols in front of them.
Beamer: There were no new major injuries coming out of the game, and he called running backs Marshawn Lloyd and Christian Beal-Smith as questionable for this Saturday’s game at Clemson.
Beamer: About as good as it gets for recruiting last night with the recruits on hand, the way they played and the postgame celebration.
Beamer: Loves everything Joyner stands for and everything he's about on and off the field, he continues to have more of a role, running better than he has all season, talented QB and WR, has not talked to him about his future plans
Beamer: Marcus Satterfield called every play last night. He put the gameplan together with the staff, once Beamer said he went to him and suggested a deep shot, otherwise Satterfield called every play and did a great job.
Beamer: Offensive line was great last night, used Atkins in a pass protection role more, Rattler did a great job, gave receivers opportunities to make a play.
Beamer: The plan last night was to stop the run with their four guys in the box and for the most part they did that, last year' #Clemson ran right through them and they've got to do a better job at that.
Beamer: Everybody is good coming out of last night health wise, Lloyd and Beal-Smith remain questionable.
Beamer: Loved how they responded when Tennessee got to within four, they were great on third down and time of possession, they tackled well and won the coverage on deep down the field balls, didn't allow them to run past them.
Beamer: Great night for them last night, game plan was to leave DBs on an island and they did a masterful job keeping the Tennessee receivers in check, tackled well and kept them in front and prevented big plays.
