Coach Frank Martin on job openings: ‘I came here to do a job’
March 08, 2017
South Carolina men’s basketball coach Frank Martin’s name has been floated into some potential job opening lists this offseason, mainly a report from Sports Illustrated about the NC State coaching job.
Martin addressed those possible openings and how he feels about remaining at South Carolina on Tuesday.
“I came here to do a job and I want to see that job through,” Martin said. “We are close. We have made progress. I want to see that job through.”
The Gamecocks are on the verge of a potential NCAA Tournament berth and start the SEC Tournament on Friday. Martin was surprised to hear his name was being mentioned in coaching circles.
“If my name is being thrown out there, I’m flattered,” Martin said. “I’m in a great, great place. I work for incredible people. I have unbelievable respect for my two bosses, Ray Tanner and Harris Pastides.”
Martin, who is in his fifth year with the Gamecocks, said he does not pay attention this time of year to what people are writing because “of all that nonsense and all that stuff that gets put out there.” He also noted that the contract extension he signed last offseason came with a big buyout, which is “scary.”
“Growing up as a kid, I moved 15 times in my first 17 years on this planet,” Martin said. “I don’t like moving. I don’t enjoy moving to a new block and meeting new people every year.
“I wouldn’t have signed that contract last year if my intent was to leave here. I had the opportunities last year. I wouldn’t have signed my contract last year.”
