4 star DE Darrius Caldwell 6'6" 215lbs of of Pearl River JC, MS may soon end up with an offer from USC, and he has said if the Gamecocks offer, he will commit. And if that happens, his coach says the Gamecocks will be gaining an excellent prospect. "He's probably the best defensive end in our state," coach William Jones said. "He has the measurables to be considered one of the best in the league.
Darrius is an NFL guy. He's the best pass rusher I've ever had, a legitimate, premier pass rusher. He has a pass rush plan every time the ball is snapped." Jones said Caldwell can be an end in a 4-3 scheme or an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme. USC offered Caldwell in high school but the Atlanta native signed with Illinois in 2011. He played in 12 games as a redshirt freshman but Jones said the departure of his position coach led to Caldwell leaving. "He needed a change," the coach said.
"He's a good person, a good kid. He just has to decide academics are important." USC recruiter and defensive line coach Deke Adams worked with Jones in 2001 and they remain friends, and Adams called Jones seeking information on Caldwell. Adams has visited with Caldwell and is waiting on a USC evaluation of his transcript before making a formal offer. Caldwell is working to graduate in May.
