Coach says QB Luke Doty has big upside

JULY 31, 2018                BY PHIL KORNBLUT                    LINK: SPORTSTALK

Luke Doty
QB Luke Doty (6-2 190) of Myrtle Beach, who made an unofficial visit to USC Monday,  is considered the top quarterback prospect in the state for the 2020 class despite playing the position for a limited amount of time with the Seahawks.  He backed up a three year starter last season while also playing some wide receiver.  But he has proven himself in seven on seven tournaments and camps and has several major offers to his credit, including USC.

“He’s very dynamic with the ball in his hands,” said Myrtle Beach coach Mickey Wilson. “He’s a legit 4.4 kid as far as running the 40 yard dash. He’s super explosive. He’s really come into his own this year. He’s done a great job of watching film, studying the game and learning our offense inside and out. We’re just excited about getting him on the field and kind of turn him loose and let him make some plays for us.”

According to the team’s website, last season Doty passed for 700 yards with 5 touchdowns and 7 interceptions, rushed for 250 yards and 1 touchdown and caught 35 passes for 391 yards and 5 scores.

Doty has camped at USC and Clemson in recent summers.  The Gamecocks, to this point, have come after him a long harder than the Tigers.  USC has offered while Clemson has put more attention on DJ Uiagalelei of California, a quarterback it has offered.

“Coach Muschamp and Coach Bentley and those guys have done a great job recruiting him,” Wilson said. “With Clemson, I think Clemson is a little bit different scenario with those guys. He’s been up to camp with those guys the last couple of years and things have gone well but has not received an offer from those guys yet, but I think they’re a little bit slow to pull some triggers on some 2020 guys at this point.”

Doty also has offers from Auburn, NC State, Coastal Carolina, Virginia Tech, TCU, Duke, North Carolina, Ole Miss, Florida State, Miami and Baylor.  This summer he also camped at Auburn and North Carolina. His coach said the decision making process is moving forward but he’s not expecting an answer for a few months.

“I think he’s just taking it all in,”  Wilson said. “He’s had the opportunity to go to some places and visit and speak with some coaches and all that good stuff that comes in recruiting. At some point here in the next little bit, probably before our season starts, we’ll kind of sit down and maybe pick out some leaders and pick out some schools that he really likes and we’ll go from there.”

Doty and the Seahawks open their season at home Augusta 24th against Hanahan.
